What are your thoughts on the limits for proxies? I am wondering what other people think about proxies as a friend uses them quite alot...

Wherever the Emperor commands.

I play a lot of "just for fun" games... and sometimes me and my friends want try something new.

Example: one of my friends had entire guard proxy army with 40+ orks as guardsmen. He also had 4 russes, (one of them wasent proxyed) the other three were an ork trukk and 2 hammer heads.

To me... proxying is a way to tryout new stuff without needing to fork over a lot of $$$$

but... in real games i only only really like proxy to an extent (like wargear)

IE: That is not a flamer hes got... its now a meltagun

In general, I don't have a problem with my friends proxying because it isn't very often and it's typically just to see if a unit is any good before purchasing it.

Is he working on replacing the proxies with the actual models?

Is he just trying out different units until he can decide which he likes better and purchases them?

Is it confusing every game, not knowing what is what?

As long as you talk it over before the game and you're both okay with it, go for it. I had a guy pull out a bunch of YuGiOh cards taped together in the vague shape of a Monolith and I told him straight up no. However, I've had someone pull out a Land Raider Crusader and say it was a Redeemer and I had no problem whatsoever.

I personally proxy minis when I don't have the appropriate mini.

In a recent game, I proxied Sisters with Stormbolters as Sisters with Bolters. I had no Stormbolters in my list, so that made it easier to remember.

I also proxied Sisters Repentia minis as Sisters with Bolters in the same game, again because I didn't have enough Sisters with Bolters miniatures, and I didn't take a Sisters Repentia unit in my army.

Trying out new stuff is fun, and not everyone has the money to go and buy up a new unit or units every time they want to try something new and don't already have the minis for it.

In friendly games - the only ones I play these days - I have no issues with proxied miniatures so long as it is clear what is what.

I would rather play than not play, so I have no problems with proxies.

"'players must agree how they are going to select their armies, and if any restrictions apply to the number and type of models they can use."

This is an actual rule in the actual rulebook. Quit whining about how you can imagine someone's army touching you in a bad place and play by the actual rules.

When people ask, "What's the point in understanding everything?" they've just disqualified themselves from using questions and should disappear in a puff of paradox. But they don't understand and just continue existing, which are also their only two strategies for life.

I'm fine with proxy with two conditions:
1) you're going to get the actual model or a suitable conversion if you like it and plan on using it consistently
2) it's not a paper model

Proxying is a great way to find out if you actually like the unit especially since 40k's so expensive now. If you buy a land raider, hate it and never use it again, it'll be a total waste of money and time (and a big one too). So maybe you want to use a rhino as a "count as" for a few games to really see if it's what your army needs. That's totally fine with me. In fact, I would recommend you to play with proxied models for a few games before deciding since you can't really make a good decision off the results of one good game or two bad games.

My HUGE problem with proxy comes when the person clearly loves the unit, uses it all the time yet continue to proxy random sh!t for it.
Example, a friend of mine keeps using rhinos as predators for 2 months now. It was fine initially because he hated the idea of the predator and wanted to field test it to see if the hype was "all that." 2 months later, he's STILL using rhinos despite using them in every single game he plays AND talks about how it's the best thing ever.
Now, if he was in a financially difficult situation, I'd understand but he's not and just continue to insist on using a rhino.
To make matters worse, he's a competitive player who runs nothing but what he calls "optimized" lists and argue like crazy over cover.

TLDR:
Proxy is good for test run.
Proxy is not good for long term play.
Proxy means your opponent is being friendly enough to allow it.
So don't be a WAAC player if you're going to proxy.
WYSIWYG is great for fun lists since very few people can field a 6 razorback list. Also encourages to take what you have which again, helps with keeping lists fun.

Im fine with proxy as long as it is isn't the entire army all the time. Proxy units for one or two battles and thats fine but past that I start getting annoyed. Also the proxy needs to be at least somewhat close to the right size of what it is proxying. No grot count as a Warboss stuf. Also have it done in someway that makes it easy to remeber what is counting as what.

One proxied unit was Incubi being used as Grotesques. What do you think?

Proxying one weapon for another is fine with me, as long as you are consistent.
Proxying one vehicle as a similar sized/armed vehicle is also fine. No problems with a rhino-landraider, but a chimera isn't going to pass as vendetta.
Same for one unit as another. "Those nobz are MANz today" is fine with me.
Paper cutouts of the models stuck on the bases are still ok, though I wont play the same cutouts for years.
Proxying similar armies as another is also fine, but guardsmen as tyranids or space marines as dark eldar is crossing a line. Lets just have a game with our regular armies instead.
Bases with text written on them? Hell no. I'm not fielding bottlecaps either.
Fielding trash, like empty bottles as vehicles is a no-go. If you don't want to/can't spend money on models borrow an army or play on vassal.

7 Ork facts people always get wrong:
Ragnar did not win against Thrakka, but suffered two crushing defeats within a few days of each other.
A lasgun is powerful enough to sever an ork's appendage or head in a single, well aimed shot.
Orks meks have a better understanding of electrics and mechanics than most Tech Priests.
Orks actually do not think that purple makes them harder to see. The joke was made canon by Alex Stewart's Caphias Cain books.
Gharkull Blackfang did not even come close to killing the emperor.
Orks can be corrupted by chaos, but few of them have any interest in what chaos offers.
Orks do not have the power of believe.
