So me and my friends decided we're gonna start playing warhammer and there's 4 of us. I end up playing about 1 game a week and I want to play more, I'm constantly re-thinking my army, reading through the forums and what not but is there something like an online game I can play that's an adequate substitute? Or a combat simulator where you enter the assaulting and defending guys and see the outcome? Thanks

Vassal, basically playing 40k on the computer. Near exact same as the tabletop version, in 2d. For me, it's too complicated and not my taste, but you might like it.

I play a great game when I'm all by my lonesome. Iv'e got a copy of all the codexes and I write a list down of all the characters from every codex and then I draw up kind of Gladiator contest where they fight each other one on one with the winners going through to the next round. Every fight I place the relevant pages next to one another, place a dice next to each of their picture to represent how many wounds are left and keep going with each winner going to the next round to fight someone who also won their last bout. It can get really tense especially as you near the finals.

Try it, it's fun. Well I think so anyway. One recent quarter final was Cpt Sicarius Vs Ragnar Blackmane and it was REALLY close. Blackmane rushed in and carved two wounds from Sicarius leaving him severely wounded so Sicarius came back with a big 'win or lose' attack and went for his 'coup de grace' single attack and with the last of his strength, decapitated Blackmane.

The biggest upset that has ever transpired in the 'arena' was when Col Straken defeated an Eldar Avatar! Yeah, really and Mat Ward wasn't anywhere to be seen either.

I play games against myself with my orks and my space marines. I usually play favors, but sometimes it gets crazy since i know exactly what my...erm..."opponent" is planning. It's as weird as you think it is.

I taught my wife to play so I always have an opponent around. Otherwise I have vassal although I still haven't actually tried it yet.

I go on Vassal and try to refine my list. Just beware of Vassal's dice roller, as it tends to roll in clumps from time to time. (I'll see - at least once or twice a game - a huge string of 1s come up on the roller)

Or you could try to paint your army. I don't (because I'm lazy, and a bad painter) but meh.

Only if it searches for Vassal, and adds the 40k bit.

What to do in your free time, when you can't play with your friends:

1. Paint your models.
2. Spend more time modeling your stuff to make it unique.
3. Play the Dawn of War video games. Not exactly like the real 40k. In fact, not at all like the real 40k. But it's fun as hell.
4. Vasal (I have no desire to play it, though).
5. Go to your local game store and play pick-up games with people.
6. If you are in school, do your damn homework. make good grades. Get a good job. Buy more 40k stuff.
7. Date some chicks.
8. Seriously, date some chicks.
9. Work out.
10. Clean your room.

It did get shut down, for a time. I don't know the details, but I'm assuming the guys on the Vassal 40k team resolved their issues with GW. They did, after all, just make another big update adding Grey Knights and Dark Eldar to the module.

I'm guessing you didn't download it from the official site? You should really get some antivirus software for your computer, there are many free ones out now that will prevent things like that.

On topic: is there a Vassal tutorial that someone could link?

Vassal is only an option if you want a game that would usually take 90 minutes to take 10 hours.

It in all way sucks with it's hyper-complications.

"'players must agree how they are going to select their armies, and if any restrictions apply to the number and type of models they can use."

This is an actual rule in the actual rulebook. Quit whining about how you can imagine someone's army touching you in a bad place and play by the actual rules.

People can play a game of WH40k in 90 minutes? It usually takes me at least that long just to get terrain set up, armies unpacked, and deployment done. 10 hours is a normal game length for me, but we spread it out over a week or two.

Anyways, back on topic, painting your minis is a great way to spend the time. It's what I should be doing right now.

Play a game with yourself, some people laugh at that, other find it worthwhile.
I am the latter tbh, it allows you try out alternative builds, get to know unit capabilities, clarify rules and generally do things you probably would never do/try in a competitive game.
We all know the blatant cons of it but they dont override the overall benefits and fun of it.

Practice rolling dice, or sacrifice virgins to the dice gods for good rolls in your next game.
