When I do play space marines, I always play with shrike.

Shrike -------------------------------------------195

2 x Dreadnought in Drop Pod -----------330
Heavy Flamer & Extra Armour

10 Vangaurd with Drop Pod -------------415 (Combat squaded before deployment 5 go with shrike outflanking. Power weapons split evenly between drop pod 5 and shrike's 5)
2 Powerfist & 4 Lightning Claw w/ Storm Shield

10 Sterngaurd in Drop Pod --------------330 (Right after drop combat squaded 5 with the meltas and 5 with plasmas)
4 Combi-Melta & 5 Combi-Plasma

2 x 5 Scouts in Landspeeder Storms -230
Powerfist & Combi-Melta, Speeder with Multi-Melta

Really hope I get 1st turn because that'll put the storms at full use. Dreadnoughts come in on 1st turn and hopefully pop and assault, or just assault. 2nd turn hopefully the rest comes in atleast by turn 3. 'Tis a very simple pop and assault list.

First you have 4 elites.
Second: here's the major issue with this list: Vanguard vets.
They are a 415 point sink that really isn't going to help you out. They aren't worth it. They are outperformed by other CC (just look at genestealers) and they're expensive as hell.
If you're going to combat squad those sternguards, make one meltas and one flamers. Plasmas are nice, but overall flamers or meltas are better for your sternguards. They give them flexibility (and meltas are potent at 12", and flamers can deal with hordes. The plasmas can deal with heavy infantry, but at most you gain two extra kills on that turn, and no flexibility).
THe scouts are a little expensive, I think. Lose the powerfist and combi-melta (that's 70 points total. Maybe grab a speeder w/MM/HF).
The extra armor on the dread is nice, but it won't be that helpful. I'd say lose it (another 30 points.

So here's what I'd do with this list. Maybe it's not as fluffy, but I think it'll do better. It's not perfectly competitive, but this is what I'd do in a shrike list like this:

HQ:
Shrkie: 195

Elites:
2x Dreadnought in Drop Pod w/HF: 300
10xsternguard w/Drop pod (9 combi-meltas (or flamers, or a mix). :295

Troops:
2 x tac squad w/flamer/ML in drop pod (or rhino): 410

Fast Attack:
5 assault marines (for shrike): 100
2x1 Speeder w/TML/HF: 180

Total: 1500

I think this might be a little more potent than the above list. Personally, if you're going to run shrike, I'd look at some of the posted shrike lists on this forum. However, this will be more potent (I'd advocate losing those assault marines, myself, but they will protect shrike I guess...)

How do I have 4 elites. I have 2 dreadnoughts and 1 sterngaurd. Vangaurd are fast attack and i have 1 of them and 2 land speeder storms.

Dropping the scouts could be a good idea except I just don't like tac squads much at all. The melta & flamer combo seems pretty good. I'll try out both.

I just think that vangaurd are pretty cool. I've seen them work so I will keep them for my first test game. Assault marines just don't pack as much of a punch.

Mei culpa, thought it said 2 sterns.
I hate to say it but still, the vanguards aren't worth their points.
And question, do they have jump packs? I assume not. So they're going to go, on foot, with shrike? I mean, I always thought he was accompanied by jump infantry.

Second, the vets are nice, but termies in LCs will outperform them every time (they're tougher, can be brought on in LRs, and have an invuln save. Yes, you have 4 invuln saves in those vanguards, but they're so expensive. Adding in the price of jump packs, they're more expensive than 5 termies w/LCs or TH/SS and a raider combined.
Here's a question for you. What if your Drop pod scatters? You have 415 points away from an enemy that could be shot to death in a turn.
Really here's the key question: are those vanguard vets worth 41.5 points each? I, personally, can't believe that's the case, especially given the fickle nature of the drop pod deep strike.
Anyway, you can do what you want, but I don't know about the vanguards and their cost.

That's still 38 points per model for an S4, 3+ (w/4 3++), while a termie is 40 pts for a 2+/3++

Termies also take up an elite not a fast attack. The dreadnoughts are key in this list and the sterngaurd have their purpose. Besides Land Raiders doesn't fit raven gaurd fluff. I also have a disliking of landraiders in general : (
