Yes well I'm kind of new to the game and I wanted to know about a few things

What is a conversion? Can you use a converted model in game?

What is washing? How do you make a wash?

Can you use a heavy weapon and then still attack with your normal weapon in one turn (i.e. a fire warrior using a markerlight and then firing in one shooting turn)

thats all for now and thanks in advance for helping me out, you guys always seem to know whats up with 40k.

A conversion is when you take a model, and change it from the norm. Add spikes, chop the gun off and add another, make dreadlocks out of putty, or whatever. You can use a conversion if it fits the intended model it represents (not always what it started off as), and if the gear on it is WYSYWYG (currect for what the army lists says it has).
Conversions are onten not allowed in tourneyments, so check before signing up.

Washing is using watery paint. It isn't, but that's the basics of it. You can mix a wash (see the painting and crafting forums). GW sells pretty good washes, and there are lots of tutorials on how and when to use them.
A use of a wash might be to paint a gun in metal, wash it in black (or a dark colour) and hilight it in silver.

Heavy weapon models are usually one-shot-a-turn troops, so can use the heavy weapon, or something else they have. There's no real difference in the rules between a heavy and a normal weapon, but you can't move and fire a heavy in the same turn.
There's next to nothing that can fire more than 1 weapon per turn. Vehicles, and monsterous creatures, maybe.

First off, welcome to 40k! It can be a rather time consuming hobby. But, if you stick with it, it is very rewarding, and a much better use of free time then vegging out in front of the tv.

As Skinnereal said, conversions are any time you take a model and modify it to fit your taste. I find that they are almost always allowed in tournaments, as long as they obey two things. 1) They look cool. 2) They aren't obviously modeling for advantage (when you specifically convert a model to give you an in-game advantage, like making a gun on a tank much taller to give a better field of view).

Washing basically gives the opposite effect of drybrushing. Drybrushing impacts the raised areas of a model, which you typically want to do in a lighter color. Washing impacts the recessed areas of a model, which you typically want to do in a darker color.

Models other than vehicles and MCs can only ever fire one weapon per turn (unless they have a specific special rule that says otherwise).

Hi.

What is a conversion? Can you use a converted model in game?

A conversion is when you take a model and alter it in some fashion (such as cutting off the hand with the pistol and replacing it with an axe). It is the only way to represent some gear combinations or models, since Games Workshop does not produce models for every unit, or even every piece of wargear available to a unit.

You can use a conversion in a game, but be warned. Any alteration to Games Workshop's intellectual property (the model) is a violation of their IP. If you play in a Games Workshop store, you can be asked to leave just for having a converted model, or they can refuse to allow you to use the conversion piece. This is fairly rare, though. It usually isn't an issue unless you use recognizable intellectual property from another company (such as a Barbie cell phone with the word BARBIE or MATTEL clearly visible on it).

What is washing? How do you make a wash?

Really, any medium (usually water) with a smaller amount of pigment in it than normal paint. As the water dries, the pigment is drawn into the recesses (lower areas) of the model, pulling away from the raised areas. You can buy premade Games Workshop washes at your local hobby store, or make your own with water and regular old paint.

Can you use a heavy weapon and then still attack with your normal weapon in one turn (i.e. a fire warrior using a markerlight and then firing in one shooting turn)

Nope. Normally you can only fire one weapon per shooting phase, regardless of how many you have. Any exceptions will be specifically noted in the rules for the unit. You cannot move, nor shoot another weapon, nor assault, in the same turn you fire a heavy weapon. The Relentless special rule provides an exception to this, and remember that models on bikes and models that are Slow and Purposeful automatically have Relentless.

thats all for now and thanks in advance for helping me out, you guys always seem to know whats up with 40k.

No problem.

Now How about an XV8? Can you say, fire your burst cannon, missle pod, and Fusion blaster all in one turn or do you have to choose only one to fire?

I think they can shoot 2 weapons, it would be in their special rules in the Tau codex.

If Tau buy the right specials for their Crisis Suits, they can fire 2 weapons a turn.

Also, Cyclone Terminators can fire 2 missiles and a storm bolter, while moving, every turn.
