But 3rd ed is very similar to 5th? I'm guessing he means more like 2nd ed and RT.
While I don't play any old editions, I am a collector of mins from that era:
Here's the whole army:
Captain Delgado and his command squad:
Sergeant Rico and his tactical squad:
Sergeant Villa and his rhino-borne tactical squad:
Lead tactical squad - the sergeant may be used as Pedro Kantor at some point in the future:
Techmarine Bob with his Thudd gun (counts-as Thunderfire) and the plasma cannon dreadnought:
My second dreadnought, with what I counts-as an assault cannon:
The Space Hulk Terminator squad, with "Bernie" the heavy flamer Terminator, who earned eternal glory in this battle: http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/231337.page
Since I took these pictures over a year ago, I've added a few vehicles and Marines, and I already had some 2nd ed stuff that wasn't pictured. Right there is about 1500 points though.

I love 2nd edition 40k. Especially the vehicle rules. Where else can you have tanks going out of control and exploding!
Nice army Brother CRM. That would constitute an overwhelming force in 1st/2nd edition as well. Especially when you tool them up with various juicy wargear cards.

Lovely, takes me back! Sadly I gave away all my early stuff when I was out of the hobby, just seemed to be taking up space. Love those old dreadnoughts, totally unlike the modern ones, a different feel.

Had a 2nd ed game last weekend with some mates who stopped playing when 3rd ed came out.
2000pts. Took us over 4 hours (had to stop and keep refreshing the beers).

I haven't broken out the rules/books for a game. However, just last week I sat in my storage locker for a good hour or so reading through all my old codexes, rulebooks, issues of WD and WFB army books. I enjoyed really enjoyed the nostalgia.

I hear lots of good things about 3rd. Hopefully it's better than the vehicle based clusterfeth that is 5th.

You couldn't move and rapid fire, and there were no run rolls. You could assault out of vehicles. The rhino rush was king. Then 4th overcompensated and turned vehicles into rolling coffins. Now vehicles are worth using again. Honestly, I think 40k 5th ed is the best we've had. It's not perfect, but most changes since 3rd have been positive.

Still like playing 2nd edition. Fell out of love with 40K after 3rd, still like the figures though.

Do this more with Necromunda and Epic. Still always play the original version of Necro and with Epic we occasionally play 2nd edition Space Marine/Titan Legions. Still have all the rulebooks and company/detachment cards in the old titan legions box.

When I first got into 40k earlier this summer I tried getting the rule book off Amazon for cheap, the book the came in the mail is was third edition and I know my buddy has a third edition Tau Codex might be fun to have a game.
If it's models you're after I just got a 10 man squad of 2nd Edition Imperial Guard Storm Troopers off eBay, I really wanted them for the berets, painted them Midnight Blue like Air Force Security Forces berets.
