Gentlemen.

I'm just starting, and I'm trying to decide what army to start with.
The local game store has a few armies on consignment, and there's a handful of Chaos Marine armies floating around the local Craigslist, but none of those really seem like something I'd enjoy playing.
I tend to enjoy playing things that are tricksy and unexpected. I also have an affinity to things I haven't seen played, or haven't seen played well.

After some research, I cut my choices down to the following, in order of preference:

Chaos Daemons (So far the most extensively researched):
-Tzeentch-exclusive, or at least Tzeentch-heavy army with lots of tricksy bits (The local gamestore has a Slaanesh-heavy Daemon army, which could be used as a base). I really like the Changeling and Blue Scribes, and just the general feel of the shenanigans that stem from playing Tzeentch, with We are Legion, etc. Also, since the Blue Scribe model isn't available anymore, it would give me the chance to make something unique for this army.

Tau:
-Ethereal is a must. I'd most likely include Broadsides and Hammerheads, but that remains to be seen. I'm playing around with the idea of a Kroot-heavy army, but that would make the Ethereal less effective.

Necrons:
-Hello Kitty Necrons. This is more of a silly army, but if I could get it to work, I would be really happy. I'd most likely replace the Warrior heads with tiny Hello Kitty heads, and I saw an awesome Wraith flower conversion. Also playing with the idea of replacing a Monolith's green crystal with a giant Hello Kitty head with laser eyes.

At this point it's a tossup between the ideal and what I can afford. I have an old collection of Magic Cards, which I could probably get a fair chunk of store credit at a local store, or sell online for cash for models.
Suggestions, comments, lulz, and dakkas all appreciated

I love the Hello Kitty idea. I use My Little Ponies as Fiends of Slaanesh in my new Chaos Daemons army.

Forget Tau, I'd go with deamons or necrons. Prolly start with the deamon army first.

One more reason I would want to start a Necron army, since the new 'dex might give me the drop on a fair number of players still unfamiliar with the new rules.

I was skimming the Tau codex and realized how bland most of the unit designs are, though a few do look pretty awesome.
At this point it's definitely between the Daemons and Necrons, just depending on what I can afford/find/trade for. I could buy the Slaanesh army from the store, and then use that as a base to start my Daemon army from (since they said it was fairly mixed, just Slaanesh-heavy), but if I can find a better deal on some of the more expensive Necron bits (Like monoliths, $66 is a bit much for a single unit, regardless of the insanity those bring about). Not to mention the sourcing of Hello Kitty shenanigans, though that will probably be slightly less painful to buy.

I really appreciate the comments thus far guys, keep 'em coming! New ideas (customization or army) are also welcome.

Oh well your local store has a Slaanesh Daemon army just hanging out used ready for you to buy? I am jealous.

A Slaanesh Daemon army is exactly what I am trying to start.

Make me a Tzeentch army and I'll trade ya :B
I think I may buy the army and just trade around. It would be a good start, and I think he's only asking for $150 or $200 for the whole thing.

Necrons all the way!! But maybe thats cause i have 11,000pts of them....

Yeah they do say an updated in Oct. (undead theme is what i've heard) but if you do choose them stick to warriors, monoliths, lords, wraiths and immortals as they are getting changed the least (destroyers are rumored to become jump infantry :( ).

But Daemons have many more options than necrons. they also have quite a bit of different units and upgrades so would probably be better if you really like the whole aspect of painting and modeling. Necrons are fairly bland on that but that works for me since im not really the artist type (granted my plasma ball in monolith is by far the coolest thing i've ever done)

But it really up to you and how you like to play. I personally like shooting anything that is close enough, not to mention the dreaded monoliths for most people, and C'tan (hehe i like chopping MC's in CC in one turn). Daemons can reallly be anything (right?). Khorne armies are CC fury (shutters at the sight of my warriors getting hacked to unrepairable bits) but then again necrons get squashed in CC most of the time.

Actually just called the store and they told me exactly what models were in the army.
Pink Horrors, Tzeentch Flamers, Bloodletters, and a Tzeentch Herald.
NO idea what made the first guy tell me it was Slaanesh-heavy, but I think I just found my starter xD

I think I'll save my Hello Killy army (as accidentally named by my roomie), till I have more time to source the conversion materials, and the new 'dex is out.
I've heard Oct and November, so if the Daemons don't work out, I can swap up quickly
