I currently play Smurfs but I am looking to start a small (for now) Xenos force. The idea is to have a small opposition force to use to introduce my friends to 40k. I want to have a varied, semi-competitive force that doesnt break the bank, hopefully using the Battleforce as a base. Any sugguestions?

I'd say go with either Nids or Orks. Prefferrably Nids. I think the 2 armies compliment each other well for a small intro game.

Hands down Orks are the cheapest Xenos to start. You can make 90% of their vehicles out of bitz and card. Also you can get a 3 halves of the starter box for the price of one battleforce box.

Do daemons count? Their battleforce is 717 points base not upgrades, convert up a herald and take some upgrades and your at 1k, sprinkle in some elites and your at 1250, add in a Big Deamon as an HQ you are at 1500, not bad for about $200.

Thus, After having thus successively taken each member of the community in its powerful grasp and fashioned him at will, the supreme power then extends its arm over the whole community. It covers the surface of society with a network of small complicated rules, minute and uniform, through which the most original minds and the most energetic characters cannot penetrate, to rise above the crowd. The will of man is not shattered, but softened, bent, and guided; men are seldom forced by it to act, but they are constantly restrained from acting. Such a power does not destroy, but it prevents existence; it does not tyrannize, but it compresses, enervates, extinguishes, and stupefies a people, till each nation is reduced to nothing better than a flock of timid and industrious animals, of which the government is the shepherd

Wow the Daemons one sounds great.

Actually the Tau box is awesome. It is literally a self contained ~500 point force. 1 HQ (Crisis suit), 1 elite (stealthsuits), 2 troops (firewarriors and kroot), and 1 dedicated transport (devilfish). While not a great force, it isn't crap, and won't get annihilated on the field. Add some more firewarriors, a unit of crisis suits, and a hammerhead, and you can easily get 1000 points.

Necrons probably the best, one of those add a monolith maybe a lord with res orb and done.

I second tau, for the battle force, if you go with orks see if someone can half the AoBR set with you.

From what I've been told you can get everything you need to build a competitive Nids list from the battleforce. Well actually several battleforces.

Tau have a great battleforce. They're not an especially great army or anything, but you can always play them while the person you're introducing uses Marines or whatever. You can build a legal force with the Tau box (1 HQ, 2 troops, 1 elite, 1 transport) and you should be set.

Thanks for all the great feedback! Tau is most likely out for the moment, or at least until they get a new codex.

Ideally, I would like for the initial force to start as a kernel for a full-size competitive army. So the idea is less of which battleforce makes the best initial army and more of which one has the most use in a 1500 or 2K army.

That or just which Xenos army is the overall cheapest to build to 2K?

Cheapest xeno army to build up would probably be Orks then. You can just buy their contingent from AoBR a few times and you'll be doing okay.

Orks! Battle forces and mega forces(if you can find them) are a fabulous way to build the army, simply because there are only 2 troops slots and nobody ever takes 1 of them.

A basic ork list of 60 boyz, 9 bikers, 3 nob bikers, 2 trukks, and a converted warboss from a nob will run you $300 USD if you can find a battleforce and mega force. That is a 1500 pt list depending on how you run it.

Than it would seem that the Daemons one suggested earlier would be the best buy overall for what you are looking to do with it

I have bought Battleforces for Orks, Space Marines, Tyranids and Necrons. Of those the Orks is by far the best (Provided you want the Trukk & Warbikers that is) as it has so many extra bits. Best buy

Apologies for talking positively about games I enjoy.

I am greatly torn:

Tyranids would be awesome because of fluff...
Orks would be cheapest...
Dark Eldar would be the most competitive...

Not sure what to do.
