Now I just finished reading the first heretic and age of darkness and two things confuse me. Firstly in the first heretic, Argel Tal and his marines become stranded in the warp for several months and apparently have to eat EVERYTHING (old crew members, fuel, cleaning oil ect) to stay alive. Cant space marines go into a hibernation state to avoid this? Secondly in age of darkness one of the stories describes Ultramarines fighting Salamanders. Does this mean the Salamanders (and perhaps sections of other loyalist legions, not just the Dark Angels) had traitor elements?

And heaven forbid if the Marine would also happen to have an intimidating looking, vertical scar. Then you're surly boned. Those guys are the worst. Not a chance I'd say.

The Salamander vs. Ultramarines thing was apparently a war game.

If I remember correctly, the Word Bearers trapped in the warp were under almost frequent attack by daemons and other nasties for months on end. Hibernating would've made them sitting ducks.

I agree with coolyo294, I think that part was a wargame, but it is entirely possible that every loyalist legion had traitor elements, not just the Dark Angels. Obviously, half of each loyalist chapter didn't just up and switch, but a squad here or company there could've very easily decided that their best interests were served by Horus over the Imperium. Individual Space Marines and whole squads in the 41st millennium turn to chaos on occasion.

A wargame like when guilliman disguised himself as horus and some of the rest of his legion as the sons of horus? Why are they killing their own warriors in "wargames" when they should be helping?

No one dies in the war games, it's a test of their abilities, much like the war games our military participate in now.

You'll notice one of the characters who dies in the first encounter is alive in the second and possibly third.

Think about the time when these wargames happened.

After Calth.

So maybe not the sallies are the traitors....

The discussion of the AoD collection and the story of the UM should be in the background forum IIRC.

The point of the story is ( IMO ):
- gullyman writes his codex in the heresy era
- its subtitle is imperium secundus...
- the wargames could be there to prepare the UM to the possible opposition when he presented his codex
- the UM did not leave their home base to return to terra and the story what happened at calth isn't fully told yet
