Reading through the Paladin entry in the Grey Knights Codex I noticed that Paladins don't get a Justicar. My question thus is: How do you resolve a PotW or another BoP effect on Paladins? You can't have it target the Justicar/Knight of the Flame, as there isn't one. On the other hand, you can't have it target a random member either, as the /Knight of the Flame isn't dead.

For thirteen years I had a dog with fur the darkest black. For thirteen years he was my friend, oh how I want him back.

It targets a random model in the unit.

On that note, is it actually a random model (as in on a D6 roll of 1 it is model A, D6 roll of 2 it is model B, etc ..) or does it mean you are free to pick any model in the unit to take the perils?

Random means random. Picking would be open to abuse.

Regarding it targeting a random model, can you back it up with rules? As I pointed out in the OP you only resolve it against a random model if the Justicar/KotF is dead. As there is no Paladin Justicar/KotF, there's no way to resolve the rule.

Sure, they died before you ever got to the table. That or the game stops.

Although technically you are correct in saying there is no way to resolve it without a Justicar/Knight of the Flame having been part of the unit. However I suspect 100% of Tournament Organisers/Judges will rule that you follow the rule assuming the Justicar/Knight of the Flame has died, so using a random model.

Another example of sloppy rules, if they had simply worded it like this instead:

..., it is resolved against the Justicar or Knight of the Flame or against a random non-character model in the squad if there is no Justicar or Knight of the Flame in the squad.

this issue wouldn't have come up.

What do you do if any squad loses it's Justicar? Do they no longer suffer PotW when using their power? Page 21 says random non-character model. Why would Paladins be any different?

The only "hobby" GW is interested in is lining their pockets with your money.

...because BoP says what to do if the Knight dies - NOT what to do if the knight isnt there.

Given this can happen with CS a 10 man squad, and not just paladins, then "pick a random model anyway" is the most sensible solution.
