More info: where are you? what's the context?
Example: if your at your car, and they are just in the case, don't even bother trying to hide the case. just start up the conversation. she probably won't notice the cases.
Example: your sitting in a dorm room, and she walks in to ask a question. answer question, start up other conversations. let her engage you on the models. or try the "hey can i get a opinion? i've been trying to match colors, do you think you can offer some insight?" i've found in the past, most females like when you ask their opinion. color choice is an easy question, which you can roll into a compliment for them. plus they get to ask why your going it, present the game as a hobby you do to kill time. tell them your interested in model painting, go from there.
Example: your sitting in a GW hobby shop and a cute girl asks what your doing that just walked in. engage conversatoin. explain you like painting, you like the models. engage question on their opinions. listen, nod, respond when appropriate smile.
I've learned from experience... cute girls like dorks. The key is to help them see past the game to the hobby, find a mutual connection on it. My wife found out about my hobby. We joked about my painting, and I mentioned I struggle with compliementry colors, what was her opinion the newest model I had an opinion on.... conversation went from there.

Don't hide them, but don'r point to them and go "look at these!" either. Leave them be, if she see's them and asks about them, say something short. "It's part of a hobby I collect and paint." Going overboard or trying to defend them to someone who knows not about them can come off strange. Odds are the girl will not even take notice or bring them up.

Just be honest. "I'm a gamer, I play games and paint models in my spare time" should be good enough. You don't have to show em off unless she asks to see em
But if you hide it, and she finds out later, she'll be upset that you hid it from her even if she acts like she isn't upset. And then a month later you'll have an argument and she'll be like "you can't even be honest with me about your stupid army men so how can I trust anything you say?". Then you'll be sleeping on the sofa and spending your hard earned model money on flowers instead.
Tell em up front to avoid unnecessary aggravation later. If she sees your models and runs the other way, she's not a girl worth keeping.

1. What Necros said.
2. Being a gamer is part of you, innit? Right, so it isn't a big deal if she does not like that part of you as long as she likes the rest, but she must at least know about it and be sure that it does not stop her liking you.
If you hide it because you fear she might stop liking you if she knew about it, you will never quite know whether she'd really like you, or whether she only likes that image you try to portray in front of her - that guy who does not play with toy soldiers, but is not actually you.
Friendships and relationships where the friends or significant other actually only like a person you actually are not, but only simulate to be, leave you emotionally unsatisfied all the time and will in fact make you feel unloved and worthless in the long run. Even when those same people might actually have liked the real you had you ever shown it to them. But if you do not show it, you will always assume they would not like it.
I am only now learning this, and while it is a hard lesson to learn, the reward is being actually loved for who you are, not for an act. And it might have been an easier lesson had I learned it when I was younger.

"We train young men to drop fire on people, but their commanders won't allow them to write "feth" on their airplanes because it's obscene!" (Colonel Kurtz in Apocalypse Now)
And you know what's funny? "feth" is actually censored on a forum about a dystopia where the nice guys are the ones who kill only millions of innocents, not billions. |

I'd show them to her and not be concerned whether or not she cared. I've got enough confidence and self-respect not to hinge my self worth on whether someone approves of my hobby.

I certainly wouldn't hide them, I'm proud of what I do. If they show interest I would certainly talk about them. My experience is that girls who ask about them are actually interested in looking at them particularly if they are well painted. I guess the poll assumes that some will want to hide their hobby for some reason. I make models, spot trains and I watch Doctor Who. I'm not ashamed of any, why would I be? If someone has a problem, girl or guy, it's just that - their problem. I left school 10 years ago, I'm not concerned what others think of my hobbies.

If it you house, room or dorm just make sure your workstation is clean and tidy. If they ask about it fill them in but don't go overboad. One of ex's liked the nerdy thing and my wife knew about it anyway as we have been good friends since school (plus her bro plays)

I'm married, and had to handle this topic with my wife back when we were dating. She already knew I was a gamer, and didn't mind. When she asked what they were I just told her they were pieces for a game kind of like Risk, where you build your army yourself. If she asks further questions, I happily tell her whatever she wants to know, but I don't feel the need to hide it from her or pester her with it.
Personal opinion, just play it cool, like it's nothing special.

If a cute girl's already in your house you probably don't have to worry about having a nerd hobby. She'll already have guessed and is probably ok with it.
On a first date OTOH, busting out with your Tau Codex and explaining CC rules in WH40K is probably not the smoothest move.

I have always went for the Modelling aspect before the gamer side and it usually works.Especially when you tell them that you are not amuch of a video gamer. It seems that theese days the female species looks down on video gamers more the us Wargamers. Now me and my wife have been together for 4 years and she occasionlly plays.Blood bowl is her favorite.

This.
If you're ashamed of your hobby people will take that as a negative. If you're obsessive over your hobby, people will take that as a negative. Just treat it like any other part of your life or any other hobby (e.g. fishing, sports, shooting, whatever).

Agreed with most everyone here. I am a gamer, if she is interested in me, that is just another facet of my personality that she will have to explore and accept about me. It's the exact same thing as if I was to go over to her house and find out she was a gamer (which is worst in the public eye). Just let the love and understanding flow naturally and don't hide things from your significant other (except to make yourself mysterious, if thats your thing).

Bonus points if you tell her "wear this" and throw a Sisters of Battle outfit at her. Further points if she actually wears it and doesn't run away screaming. If she runs, it's time to find out if your boltgun truly has been blessed by the Emperor...
