Has anyone had an issue with using LSG out of IoB as just spears? I am redoing my HE army after a few years off and was wondering since the models are done with both weapons I just want to know if I have to do some clipping if a judge gets wiggy about it.

I don't see why it would be a problem. Personally WYSIWYG is only an issue with 40k players. Most fantasy players are rather understanding, especially when it's something so little as saying that sea guard are just spearmen. It's not like you're saying they are white lions.

Best bet is to mix some normal spears in there, and have the front rank only having spears - that way its not confusing to look at, and the added variation to the limited poses in the IoB set will make the unit more interesting to look at.
RUle of cool usually applies however - make em look jaw droppingly gorgeous and noone will blink twice.

I hear you on the static posing, I was going to try dynamic basing to break up the lines (standing on ruins). I have some old spears (3rd, the ones that point forward, I might actually use those for the front rank) and some newer (4-6th) laying about but I really feel that the new LSG sculpts from IoB beat them hands down. That said I was going to buy some new archers to seperate my spears from bows. Thanks guys. I play 40K as well and you are right about the precision of modelling for that end (ie, thats a melta?).

I am a WYSIWYG nazi and even I would not have any problem with that (aslong as all LSG are just spearmen)

I think the only issue would be if you happened to be running both an LSG unit and a spearelf unit which would cause some confusion.

Hence running the front rank as all normal spear elves, so the first thing you see are actual spear elves.
IT helps to fix it in the mind a little more.
