So, is it better to dip and shake or brush on then shake excess?
Dipping and shaking seems wasteful, but I've not tried it yet.

I've dipped quite a few and the results are very nice, I haven't tried brushing it on because I'd rather not ruin my brushes.
These are the pros and cons that I've heard and know of.
Dipping
Pros:
-Fast
-Full Coverage
-No need of a brush
Cons:
-wasteful, although it will last for about 2-3 armies.
-messy
-thick and could hide details (although I haven't encountered this)
Brush
Pros:
-more control
-can cover specific areas
cons:
-ruins brushes
-makes the process slower, kind of defeats the purpose of using quickshade
There might be other things, but this is the general idea. Obviously you won't be dipping larger models. and whether you want full coverage or details is up to you.

try brushing too, dont be tedious about it load up a 2 round and cover the model then dry the brush and soak up the excess in places where you dont want it. Basically the same time investment as dipping and shaking in the end.

defiantly give brushing a try though, I find dipping good for small models that I'm gonna do a lot of (guardsmen) but I plan on bushing my Valkyries and possibly the HQ models, unless I decide to just use wash/highlights.

Will do. Ive got a mess of old low quality brushes laying around that would be fine to use.
Can I wash off the brushes in water, or do I need to use turpentine or something?

Use whatever it says on the can for clean up. Some are water soluble some require thinner. I'm thinking about messing around with some of the water soluble stains because they have a wider range of colors.

I went to the local Dollar General and bought some really crappy cheap brushes specifically for quickshading, so that I wouldnt be out a good brush after the quickshade ruined it, ya know?
I've tried both, and comparably, the results are the same. Whether you dip it or glob it on like crazy.
I'm pretty sure it's oil based, but double check the can anyway just to be safe.
Good luck. Oh, and do it in a well ventilated area. That crap wreaks like hell.
