To be fair, I've sculpted a number of whole minis, and I do a lot of
extensive conversion with green stuff. So a little bit of chain isn't that big a deal to me.
To sculpt a chain like this one, the easiest method I've found is done in two stages. First roll your green/grey stuff into a thin strip, then lay it onto the mini where you want the chains. With a poking tool, put holes into the stip at regular intervals, then go back and turn those holes into rings by pushing the sides of the green stuff in between your holes with a bladed sculpting tool. This will give you a set of rings that aren't tied together (they look a little bit like a child's drawing of a chain).
When that's dry, take another strip of stuff and roll it thinner than the first. Lay it directly over the holes that you've created- it should be a thin strip of stuff covering all of your holes. Then take your knife and push in the spots right over the holes that you made in step one. You may need to clean up a few edges, to make everything look perfect, but that's your chain.
