Subject: Horus, Cthonia and the Luna Wolves - what's happened there then?

Just re-reading the early Horus Heresy books for the umpteenth time and wondering about the history of Horus, Cthonia and the Luna Wolves. Has it ever been really explained how they formed and how Horus was found? The old Index Astarted article is very vague on the subject.
In Horus Rising, we find out the following.
- Horus speaks Cthonic with the accent of a Cthonian Hive Ganger, which Loken says is affected, since he didn't grow up on Cthonia.
- Horus mentions to the troops that they've ALL (the troops AND horus) known the darkness and labour of the Cthonic mines.
We already know
- Horus was the first Primarch to be found
- He's got a legion he named the LUNA wolves? Why?
Discuss!

From what I remember reading over the years is that much of the marines for the first legions came from Earth originally. Most were formed there I believe and these legions were eventually "reunited" with their primarch once that individual was found during the crusade. Later recruits would come from the homeworld where the primarch was discovered.
There is a subtle division in the Luna Wolves for instance having to do with those born on Cthonia, and those that weren't.
The name the Luna Wolves may come from the fact that many were from colonies on Luna (Earths moon). I can't cite any evidence for this.

I believe Uhlan is correct about the first marines coming from earth.

Maybe the past as hive-gangers made it easier to plant the lodge?

The first Legions were all Terran, so I guess the Luna Wolves could have been the Legion name before the discovery of Horus, and they just didn't change it...
But is there any supporting fluff?
