Hello there

im into 40k and malifaux but ive been looking for a different kind of minatures game and was hoping maybe somebody here would know one like what im hoping for.

40k's ok but features too many faceless troops so i wanted somthing with alittle more personality in each model. So i went with malifaux due to the small number of minatures means each has more personality.

But im still on the look out for somthing alittle different, Malifaux is good but theres already set characters and ive been looking for a game where you can build a group or squad yourself, like 40k with interchangable parts, to create a totally individual group, give the characters names and backstories and so on.

Possibly a sci fi setting with a twist, with a good story to it, not too futuristic. Like underground battles in mines or on abandoned space ships? maybe even a space horror like dead space??

I highly doubt theres anything like what i described but you never know.

While it pains me to recommend a GW product, the only game like you describe that I can think of off the top of my head is Necromunda.

Not only do you arm your models as you wish (within certain limits provided by their list), but some people go so far as to name each member of their gang. It even has progression rules, so your models can get stat increases, new skills, permanent injuries, gain or lose equipment, etc.

It even sort-of takes place in an underground mine; specifically it generally takes place in the deepest pit beneath a Hive City where your gang fights other gangs to control territory in this region, called the Underhive, to salvage valuable scrap metal, mechanical parts, etc.

IMO, it's GW's best game.

Infinity, it Sci-fi with a twist, think Cyberpunk in Space. While there not much converting of guys, but almost all the unit types have mutli loadout options. You can pick the models you like from a Faction and not have to worry about someone power building, as there aren't any power builds. No, I'm not kidding. There are badass models, but once you learn the rules there become easier to handle. Infinity the Game where TACTICS matter.

The best part is the Rules, Army List, and Online Army Builder are 100% free and downloadable from the Infinty site. While it only cost about 100 to 150 bucks to get a standerd force of 300pts. Then the models themself... well you will see.

Peter: As we all know, Christmas is that mystical time of year when the ghost of Jesus rises from the grave to feast on the flesh of the living! So we all sing Christmas Carols to lull him back to sleep.
Bob: Outrageous, How dare he say such blasphemy. I've got to do something.
Man #1: Bob, there's nothing you can do.
Bob: Well, I guess I'll just have to develop a sense of humor.

Hm, I don't know a lot about Infinity, I didn't think there were multiple loadouts. I've heard nothing but good things about the game, so the OP might wanna go with that instead as it's more popular than Necromunda, and is actually supported by the company that makes it.

You could look into VOR: The Maelstrom. It has special characters, build your own characters and faceless troops to lead to a slaughter. You can even build your own army using any model you like. Sadly the only place to get the rules right now is on ebay. "Skuzzy", the creator, is working on an update, but there is no timetable for a release yet.

I think you should consider doing your own background and then picking a ruleset that allows you to make your own units and figures that match what you've got in your head. There's not that much to be gained by trying to find a premade minis/rules system that matches what's in your head when you've got good ideas of your own.

Two possibilities.

Supposedly No-Limits is the open source version of VOR. It's on a level of complexity on par with 40k.

I would also suggest looking at Warengine as a possible rules engine. Also free, it plays alot faster than 40k, and though it's not as detailed, it has a nice activation mechanic that adds a fair amount of tactical depth.

It's my favorite sci-fi ruleset right now.

Ill second a vote for Necromunda, but with a twist...use the rules, but make your own tats for troops and weapons. Sure, it wont give you the ability to use points, but GWs points are kinda wonky anyways so its little loss. Ill also say Im a fan of a bit of imbalance. Sure dead even is great for tournament type play, but when are real battles truly even. Theres something quite satisfying about coming out ahead of a superior force.

It also seems Infinity has creation rules, and should be worth a look too.

Ill agree, its my favorite army level 28mm game as well, though I think its not quite what OP is looking for...he wanted more detailed not less.

That being said I will never pass up an opportunity to recommend it.

Not creation rules.

Instead alot of units can take diffenert load outs.

Take the Zero, same stats as each other, all of the get Camouflage and Infiltration, and CC Pistol & Knife. Then you choose 1 og 7 weapon/equipment loadouts not counting the LT.
1) Combi Rifle, AP mines
2) Multi Sniper Rifle, AP Mines
3) Boarding Shotgun AP Mines
4) Combi Rifle, AP Mines, Hacking Device
5) Combi Rifle, AP Mines, Forward Observer
6) Combi Rifle, E/Mauler, Deployable Repeater
7) Combi Rifle, AP Mines, Minelayer

And they aren't above adding new weapon/equipment loadouts in expansions or the online army builder if a new book isn't come out for a while.

Maybe dystopian rules based on a steam punk version of 1870 there is naval, air and land combat no troops though just vehicles it is new and well priced you can start for less than £50 and it is sold by Spartan games however as its new not all models have been released yet but it does have a good storyline.

Here's a generic skirmish engine called "unbridled Fury" that just went freeware courtesy of TOR gaming.

http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/394371.page

The link to download it is further down the page.

I just downloaded it and looked it over briefly. It looks to be very well done and comprehensive for a variety of genres. Definitley alot more detail per charachter than the WarEngine I had previously mentioned.
