I just finished my Blood angels army and I'm now looking for something else to set my teeth into and iv been taken by the green skins!
but sadly I lack the experience of the current meta or any idea what the must have units are. (lack of experience with playing them/against.)
But I want to use bikes, but i have no idea how good they are?.

Ooch, bikes, they are a tricky point for orks. Last I checked the only way of playing bikers, tactically, in ork lists, is by getting nob bikers. But I'm not sure of their tactical position recently, but a year or two back they were considered tournament cheese.
Most lists these days do include deffcoptas though, as suicide anti tank.

Bikes synergize well with your classic Kult of Speed list. You can go with lots of battlewagons full of nobs, burnas, and boyz in one direction. You generally fill out lists like this with buggies, or koptas, and bikes can certainly fit. Or you can go with a trukk spam. 6 trukks full of boyz, at least one battlewagon for your big death stars, and fill in the rest with koptas and buggies again. You can put bikes in their minimum squad of three, add a PK nob and have them as purely tank hunting units or you can give yourself a couple of hard, nob biker squads. They're good hammer units, pack a lot of punch, have a better than average survivability with wound allocation, and they get a 3+ cover save if you turbo boost them. Down side is, that they're very expensive.
If you want to use bikes, go with a list that allows your troops and other units to keep up with your bikes. An ork army wants all of its units going at roughly the same speed (aside from suicide koptas). It allows you to bring the full force of your army to bear, and gives the enemy a field that is over saturated with targets all moving together, rather than fast elements pushing up and being picked off and the rest of your army being destroyed piecemeal.
I love bikes, and am currently working on a nob biker squad of about 6 to go with my warboss. I personally just love the flavor of them. And they can still be quite effective.
Hope that helps.

He talks sense through most of it. But short of actually using normal bikers, I mean a ranged unit with BS2? Nob bikers are nice though.

You're thinking like a marine. Orks are not marines.
Dakka gunz are twin-linked and get three shots each. Meaning a full unit is still going to get about 25 S5 hits on any unit. Nobody cares about BS2 from that point onward.

7 Ork facts people always get wrong:
Ragnar did not win against Thrakka, but suffered two crushing defeats within a few days of each other.
A lasgun is powerful enough to sever an ork's appendage or head in a single, well aimed shot.
Orks meks have a better understanding of electrics and mechanics than most Tech Priests.
Orks actually do not think that purple makes them harder to see. The joke was made canon by Alex Stewart's Caphias Cain books.
Gharkull Blackfang did not even come close to killing the emperor.
Orks can be corrupted by chaos, but few of them have any interest in what chaos offers.
Orks do not have the power of believe. |

Indeed. Capable killing power easy and right before a charge too. Invaluable.
Bikes are a whole are quite good. As gpfunk said, you need them in fast lists, which I would point at a trukker list. Nice and fast, no bigger than 6 per squad. Anything less is wavering on being not required and doing less damage. Anything more causes a large unit footprint and thus a large fire magnet. 6 biker units tend to go unnoticed I've found, and really do some damage for their size

I've always found them to be too expensive for what they bring to the table. I mean Biker boyz are 25pts a model and they have almost the same stats as a regular boy except for T (5) and the 4+ cover save. Sure they're obviously faster, but they're going to lose their fearless rule very quick as you can only have 12 models per unit. And even a unit of 12 will run you 300 pts plus the Nob and PK, and the mandatory Bosspole. That's a very expensive unit for what it brings to the table.
Same things with Nob Bikerz. A model, IIRC, is 45pts per model. And if you're going to want wound allocations you're going to have to spend more points on making them all different.
Overall they're just way too expensive for Orks. Orks are supposed to be cheap and expendable. (Insert "like your mom" joke here )

Wazdakka biker lists can pack a serious punch, just a bit of a glass cannon when you lose those cover saves. 3 or so full out mobs with deff kopta/buggie support is usually what I see

a wazzdakka list can do really well. and be very fun not an all comers list and nto somethign you take to ard boyz of tournaments btu fun to play and cool models.
wazdakka and 6 groups of bikers for troops, plus some rokkit bugges and nob biker slooks pretty cool on the board and played right will do pretty well you are pretty much zoom around shooting up stuff dakkagunz on troops and rokkits on transports and such.

because they are cheap, best BS in the codex, lots of great ranged weapon upgrades, 2 dccw attacs, grant cover saves and come in packs of 3 for a single hs slot
thats why. get some.

BS3, 50 points a pop w/ Rokkits, squadrons of 3, not much competition in the HS slot, they give your Boyz a cover save, walkers move and shoot, and AV11.
What's not to like?

killa kanz are good because they can take a variety of weaponc, have a dccw and ballistic skill of 3 (not great for some armies but damn near snipers to orks) also av11 is rough for some dexes to meet in assault of shooting. plus a kan wall is another form of ork tactic doing well atm so they can be quite useful

BUT! If you are going for bikes, at the very least consider Wazdakka. He acts like a Marine Bike kaptin, and makes Bikerboyz troops choices, if that wasn't already clear.
You'll then have another HQ slot for a Mek onna bike or a Warboss onna bike, and can just fill your entire army with Bike units, if you like.
And when Orks do fast, they do really fast. Just remember to paint them red.

if just wanting 1 nobz group a nobz biker groups is pretty hard to beat, a 4+ cover AND armor, fast, better guns with thte dakkagunz, and with two wounds and different equipment for wound shenanagins you last forever (providing you also include a painboy for fnp)

Why go bikers when you can have them piled into a battle wagon with a WAAAAGH!!!! banner and big choppas (I understand that you may want a biker army but this is a great tactic not to pass on...)

battlewagon vs nob bikers... its a toss up to me.. nob bikers are crazy good, are fast. battlewagon nobz are also very strong. the main difference is the dakkagun vs the battlewagon.
in a list not fielding a kff in a battlewagon for example a kan wall 1 single battlewagon without a kff isn't goign to last very long.. while the nob bikers will due to the 4+ save. sure more things might be able to hurt them than av14. with my nob bikers I usually end up zooming them up behind some kind of cover turn 1 if possible or just dakka gun if no appropriate middle terrain to kill los from things that cna hur tthem then assault turn 2 ... easier to hide 5-6 bikes than a battlewagon

Big gunz are pretty good and make a mess of the enemy battle lines for armies like IG or Tau which excel at mowing down Boyz from afar. Lobbaz deal with their infantry gun lines, Zzappaz for Vet Mechs or Russes and having the multi-purpose Kannonz can prove most useful if one of their two elements (infantry or machines) is shaking off their lobba/Zappa fre accordingly.
