I have some tau i dont use anymore but i thought a whole army of battle suits would be fun. my question is if an army led by him can be competitive? i havn't ever really heard anyone take him in a list so i was curious.

Not really.

Makes a Good Deathstar, but you miss out on Kroot. Which hurts.

5th edition makes The O'Shovah Death Star kind of difficult to use. Getting caught in combat by almost anything good at it can be really painful due to the 5th edition sweeping advance rules, but the unit is so large and unwieldy that it's hard to avoid it or even figure out how to place it. If you want a lot of battlesuits just playing with the regular HQs you can still put 15 on the board...how many more do you really need?

The things O'shovah loses (0-1 for all the heavy support choices, 0-1 for piranhas, no kroot) is just too much. If he did something like...make a couple crisis suits scoring units or something, then sure he'd be awesome. But as is, he doesn't do much to help an already weak codex.

Failsafe detonator can protect from Sweeping advance (once).

All Tau special characters have same basic problem: lots of points for little shooting. Farsight's what, 170 points for one BS4 Plasma rifle? That's not great. His unit gets super-expensive really fast, whereas rest of the army is handicapped. Deep striking such a large and expensive unit is incredibly risky.

Mr Vetock, give back my Multi-tracker!

Thanks, I knew when I was writing that I was forgetting something that protected them but it's been a while since I shelved my Farsight army.
