I was reading an article and some people said that you could have an Inquisitor Lord with henchman and an assassin as an ally with a Space Marines army... was that an earlier edition or are allies still available? I can't seem to find anything about it in the rulebook or the codices. Maybe apocalypse only?

You can have mixed armies in apocalypse but otherwise no...

The Daemon Hunter and Witch Hunter codexes both allowed you to take Inquisitors and their followers in other Imperial armies.

That's a concept that they have moved away from with the newer Grey Knights (/ unified Inquisition) Codex and the new Sisters of Battle list.

I haven;t seen anyone complaining really because you can run the GK's in almost the same fashion as SM, and for the most part that is what they are. So really you have a nicer group to put with inquisitors these days.

If not for the mediocre who would be great, and thank goodness for those who are just terrible they make even those who are mediocre look great

You could always run GK and Inquisitors but aving an Inquisitor with his retinue and an assassin in a marine or guard army was especially fun.

I guess it is finally time to say goodbye to 3rd edition, even if it breaks your heart

If Warhammer's Storm of Magic turns out popular and generates the additional sales Games Workshop presumably hopes for as players buy little allied contingents for their armies, I suspect we might see an equivalent for Warhammer 40,000 some time after 6th ed. is launched.

I hope so.

Personally I think mixed force armies are much more interesting. Like Marines with Imperial Guard and Chaos Marines with proper Daemons. I could even see a decent DE army matched with regular Eldar..
