Subject: Immobilizing a flying troop transport on the turn it deepstrikes

(Yay my first rules question - sorry for the inaccurate model names, i'm still relatively new).
This weekend I played a space marine player with a Valkryrie who used to deepstrike. I fired on it on the turn it deepstriked, with a glancing shot that immobilized it.
We played as normal with him disembarking his troops following its immobilization.
The following day a separate space marine player, when i described the battle, mentioned that he thought 'a flyer moving flat out which is immobilized is destroyed. hence a valkyrie deepstriking is also destroyed if immobilized on the turn it deepstrikes, as deepstriking is essentially moving farther then at flat out.'
I have no idea which is right (i don't really care either, both ways would make a fun game). But which is it?

Why did a Space Marine player have a Valkyrie? Do you mean either a Blood Angels or Grey Knights player with a Stormraven?
See page 95 of the BRB, a deep striking vehicle has moved at cruising speed, per the BRB FAQ.

I would guess that is what he meant. As otherwise I call shenanigans...
But yes, Horner is right that a deepstriking vehicle moves at cruising speed effectively so if immobilized is just that, immobilized.

OK, then think of my question as helping him recall the name

Yes it was a Stormraven, thanks for the correct name. Also thanks for the rules reference! Good to know.
Things I have learned this weeked:
1. GKs fly in things called Stormravens.
2. If you use veil of darkness to teleport your squad of 20 warriors within 12 inches of a table edge, you WILL teleport off the edge of the table.

This is a fluff-description to try to rationlize rules. Deep-striking counts as moving at Cruising Speed. So, immobilizing the Stormraven will only actually immobilize it. If it had moved Flat Out, only then it would have been destroyed by an immobilzation.
Just because it "seems" like it is going faster than Cruising speed, does not make it Da Rulez.

To help you with deepstriking, practice by taking the models for your unit and packing them together both as tightly and as spread out as possible, to give you an idea how you might choose a safe landing zone.
remember, your average scatter at most without any interference from opposing or helping rules is about 7 inches, and that will be for the center model of your group, so add the minimum distance to 7 to determine where the minimum safe distance from interference will be.

Also, keep in mind that you did not immobilize the Stormraven on the same turn that it deep struck.
Turn means player turn and not game turn.
It doesn't matter in your current example, but there will be times in the future (casting psychic powers, or destroying a transport that went flat-out in the previous player turn) where this will be an issue.
