OK...so, last game my Night Goblins were accompanied by a Goblin Warboss with a Shrieking Blade, giving the unit Fear. I ended up against a mate's High Elves. Awesome, the Goblins aren't afraid of your prissy Elves anymore, smart boy. Then we ran into a small issue. Or two. We sorted it out among ourselves, but I wanna see if we got it right.

First, would the Goblins cause Fear for the Elves? Technically speaking, the Elves aren't causing the Fear that the Goblins are experiencing...it's a rule the Goblins have. So they don't Fear to Counter the Fear of the Goblins. But for the Goblin unit they are causing Fear, if you see what I mean...

Secondly, would the Shrieking Blade actually negate this? Since, again, it's not the Elves themselves that are causing Fear...it's the Goblin's own rules.

Third - do the Goblins actually count as causing fear, or only the Warboss?

Yeah, I'm still getting used to Fantasy.

As for our own answers...
Spoiler:
We decided that the Goblins did cause Fear for the Elves, the Goblins themselves were not affected by Fear, and the whole unit counted as Fear causing. They were promptly eaten by a Dragon anyway.

Only models that actually have the Fear rule are immune to it. In 7th, a single model could make the entire unit immune, but not anymore. See page 69 under Fear, especially the last paragraph.

I would have to see the wording for the Gobbo's rule as I do not have that codex. Most likely, since the Elves themselves do not have the Fear rule, the Elves would fear the Warboss, and the unit of Goblins would Fear the Elves (except for the Warboss).

I suggest you don't believe anything posted by thedarkavenger unless confirmed by other regular posters here at Dakka. He has shown he is incapable of basic English comprehension.

There's some flavour text, but the important bit would be the last line;

Fear Elves: Elves cause Fear in units of Goblins and Night Goblins.

So, you reckon the Boss wouldn't have to test, but the Gobbos would, and the Elves would know Fear? Cool. I thought if the character caused Fear, the whole unit did...still catching up on rule changes.

Only the bearer causes fear. So your unit of Gobbos would fear the elves (not much of a difference between WS 1 and 2 though ) but your hero would not. The elves would fear the Goblin character (oh, the delicious irony!) but would still have a better chance of being unaffected (darn leadership checks!)

The Elves Cause Fear, meaning that, when playing Gobbos they have the "Fear" special rule inserted in.

So for the warboss - fear vs fear so negated
For everyone else - fear vs no fear, so they are still a'feared of the elves.

Waiting for my shill money from Spiral Arm Studios

basically, both sides would have to take a Fear test.

the Goblins would use the Boss's Ld, and if the test was failed only the Goblins would be effected(the Boss isn't scared cause he's got a shiny sword)

the Elves would test because the Goblin Boss causes Fear.

I could be wrong though.

I agree with Nos' interpretation. The rule states that Elves Cause Fear in units of Goblins and Night Goblins, therefore the 'Fear' special rule is attributed to them when facing Goblins and/or Night Goblins. Since they have the 'Fear' special rule (the source doesn't matter) they are unaffected by the Warboss' Shrieking Blade, just as he is unaffected by the fear the elves cause, since Fear vs Fear cancels out. The Goblins, however, will still fear the elves.

Mandorallen turned back toward the insolently sneering baron. 'My Lord,' The great knight said distantly, 'I find thy face apelike and thy form misshapen. Thy beard, moreover, is an offence against decency, resembling more closely the scabrous fur which doth decorate the hinder portion of a mongrel dog than a proper adornment for a human face. Is it possibly that thy mother, seized by some wild lechery, did dally at some time past with a randy goat?' - Mimbrate Knight Protector Mandorallen.

All Goblins are afraid of elves.
Elves cause fear in units of Goblins and Night Goblins.

Against a unit of Goblins and a Goblin character, the Elves cause Fear against both. Fear vs. Fear is canceled, so the Elves do not have to test for the item held by a goblin.
The regular goblins don't have Fear, but the Elves do, so they have to take a fear test anyway.
