Subject: Obama's uncle held by immigration authorities

FRAMINGHAM, Mass. (AP) — President Barack Obama's uncle was stopped on suspicion of drunken driving in Massachusetts, told police he planned to arrange bail through the White House and is being held without bail by federal immigration officials, authorities said Monday.
Onyango Obama, 67, was arrested last week in Framingham, about 20 miles west of Boston, after police said he made a rolling stop through a stop sign and nearly caused a cruiser to strike his sport utility vehicle.
Police said that after being booked at the police station, Obama was asked whether he wanted to make a telephone call to arrange for bail. "I think I will call the White House," he stated, according to a police report filed in Framingham District Court.
Police said Obama, who is originally from Kenya and is the half-brother of the president's late father, pleaded not guilty Friday and is being held without bail on a detainer from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. In a court document, ICE said Onyango Obama had an earlier deportation or removal order.
His immigration status couldn't immediately be confirmed, but such orders are generally reserved for people living in the country illegally. A spokesman for ICE declined to comment on Onyango Obama's immigration case, and the White House had no comment.
Obama was charged with operating under the influence of alcohol, negligent operation of a motor vehicle and failure to yield the right of way.
Michael Rogers, a spokesman for Cleveland immigration attorney Margaret Wong, said Wong will represent Obama. He confirmed that Onyango Obama is the half-brother of Obama's father and the full-blooded brother of another relative, Zeituni Onyango, of Boston.
Zeituni Onyango made headlines last year when she won the right to stay in the United States after an earlier deportation order. She came to the U.S. from Kenya in 2000 and was denied asylum by an immigration judge in 2004.
She stayed in the country illegally and was granted asylum last year by a judge who found she could be a target in Kenya not only for those who oppose the United States and the president, but also for member of the Kenyan government.
Framingham police said Onyango Obama was arrested Wednesday after he failed to stop completely at a stop sign and a police officer had to quickly apply his brakes to avoid hitting Obama's SUV.
Officer Val Krishtal said in a written report that Obama slurred his speech and became argumentative after he was told that he was being stopped because he had failed to fully stop and yield to traffic.
"I explained to him that I narrowly avoided striking his vehicle, and he told me that he did not hear my tires screeching, so I was not being accurate," Krishtal said in the report.
Obama originally told Krishtal he had nothing to drink but later said he had had two beers, Krishtal wrote in the report.
Krishtal said Obama failed several sobriety tests and blew a reading of 0.14 percent on a blood-alcohol breath test, which is above the state's legal driving limit of 0.08 percent.
The Obama administration announced this month that it would allow many illegal immigrants facing deportation the chance to stay in the United States and apply for a work permit, and would focus on removing convicted criminals and people who might be a national security or public safety threat.

Don't care. Why should I? If he's an illegal, Obama will deport him. He has no choice.

If sent back to Kenya, he'd most likely be kid-napped and held at ransom, or spend the rest of his life in protective custody.
Unfortunately, the fether was driving drunk (allegedly), put people's lives at risk and should get what he deserves. He gets no sympathy from me.

Yeah, I'm going to watch this story very very carefully. That kind of gak may fly in third world African hellholes run by despots and dictators, but not here. I'm not saying to deport him, but he damn well better receive legitimate punishment fitting with his crime.

Obama has to deport him. If he doesn't, he'll lose the moderate Conservative vote in the next election, with the Repub ads blaring "OBAMA HATES DEPORTION!"

No, no he doesn't. All he has to do is say "Oh hey, ignore this, I'm bringing troops home for Christmas" (Which is already going to happen anyway) or some bs like that, and the only republican thing with ads is Fox News, which if someone is watching that, they weren't going to vote for him anyway.
If I'm wrong, someone with more knowledge let me know, but I do not have high hopes for this.

Its not likely to be a big political issue either way, though its also not a particularly compelling reason for Obama to exercise his political clout. People hear "uncle" and assume all kinds of social bonds which don't necessarily have anything to do with being genetically related to someone.

I don't know. Maybe it's just because I know someone who works Customs and Border, so I hear about it alot, but aren't people having problems down south with illegals and deportation? I don't think it will be OH MAN OBAMA SPARED/DIDN'T SPARE HIS UNCLE!, but I do think Fox will be... "reporting" on it, either way, if you know what I mean.

Either way, Fox would spin it as "Obama Spares Uncle Deportation: Corrupt Left Leaning Liberal Devil Incarnate" or "Obama's Uncle Deported: Prez an Evil Left Leaning Devil Incarnate."
Obama is not going to win significant traction with Conservatives either way.

The point about commercials is that come election time, each party (and special interest group, PAC and super-PAC) buys ads on all sorts of channels. Not just the news channels that regularly lean their way.
Obama was asked whether he wanted to make a telephone call to arrange for bail. "I think I will call the White House,"
Way to piss off the President. Nice job, ya drunken moron.

In the Presidential election most networks will run most ads. Fox runs Democrat ads, and MSNBC run Republican ads. The ratios may vary, but that has more to do with demographic targeting than network refusal. The Big 3 tend to split roughly 50/50.

They'll make noise, but it won't be a major issue. Most of the states having trouble with illegal immigration, in the violent sense, are likely GOP victories anyway. Automatically Appended Next Post: Mannahnin wrote:

I sort of wonder how much the President actually knows about this guy. As I recall, his father wasn't a huge feature in his life, and this dude is only his half-brother.

Right, there's already those ads going on. The stance he's taken will likely garner him quite a few hispanic votes in states with a border shared with Mexico, who may not have voted for him, and will piss off some of the more hardline Republican voter base, which would probably not have voted for him.

You clearly don't know how the advertising industry works... Republican political ads air on Fox, CNN, MSNBC, ABC, Nickelodeon, Cartoon Network, UPN, the History Channel, the Discovery Channel, etc. etc. etc. Any station that airs Democratic political ads will most likely air Republican ones as well. Advertising is (for the most part) handled through the company that broadcasts the channels, not the 'channel' itself. The fact that a new service, etc. might lean in one political direction more than another does not prevent it from having opposing advertisements placed on it. In fact, to do so would be illegal. Granted, its unlikely that the RNC would air an ad on a channel that won't target its intended demographic.

Massachusetts OUI/DUI Law - First Offense Penalty
Jail: Not more than 2 1/2 years House of Correction
Fine: $500-$5,000
License suspended for 1 year; work/education hardship considered in 3 months; general hardship in 6 months
Alternative Disposition (1st Offense OUI)
Plead to Continuance without a Finding aka CWOF. It is similar to, but not technically a guilty plea. (More info on a CWOF.)
Pay a number of fines and court fees (over $2500 in total), as well as take a hit to your insurance.
Unsupervised probation for one year.
Mandatory participation in 16 week (1 hour) alcohol-drug education (DAE) program paid for by defendant.
License suspended for 45 to 90 days (not including any penalty for breath test refusal)
License suspension is 210 days for drivers under age 21.
You are eligible for a hardship license right away, in most cases.
The Real Deal on First Offense OUI Penalties:
The minimum penalty (above) is almost always available for a first offense DUI/OUI plea, if your lawyer has OUI defense experience and knows what to ask for, and as long as there is no accident, injury, or other extenuating circumstances. In addition, a smart attorney will include all other charges in the plea deal, including civil speeding ticket/moving violations as part of the same penalty, saving you fines and insurance increases.
Although since he almost hit a police cruiser, he's probably not going to get the minimum.

On the positive, even though he has a valid SS# and driver's license that he was able to obtain despite being here illegally, since he's a non violent illegal immigrant he won't be deported. I was concerned for a moment there. Even though as a drunk driver, he could have killed innocent men, women, and children, he's not like a criminal or anything.

Many states in the US disagrees with you there. Drunk drivers ARE criminals here, in Texas, for example. The punishment for repeated drunk driving can get pretty hefty.

Going 36 in a 35 makes you a criminal as well, even if you are sober as a judge. Not that there are sober judges, but you understand.

As DUI penalties go, that's pretty tame.

Consigned to the Grim Darkness

I mean serious criminals. Police treat drunk drivers pretty poorly here, and lawmakers in general have it out against them.

The people in the past who convinced themselves to do unspeakable things were no less human than you or I. They made their decisions; the only thing that prevents history from repeating itself is making different ones.
