I saw something cool an IG player did in my store last week

He had 2 squads of 2 IG Leman Russes and put them in a criss cross

and used it to claim that all 4 tanks had 4+ cover save, I just wanted to confirm if this was 100% legal

I suppose, but going by that logic you'd get a 4+ cover save at whatever it shot at.

While both squads are obscured, only one would actually get a cover save from the unit in front of it.

So the model int he back would not get it.

If at least 50% of a unit is in cover, the whole squad gets cover. so since one tank out of two is obscured, the unit gets cover, I think.

That's how it normally works, yes. However the FAQ entry quoted earlier states that when the cover is a result of intermingled units, the unit with the model closest to the enemy doesn't receive the save.

True, but when a squad (or squadron in this case) is intermingled, it is trying to take advantage of the voodoo formation, each squad giving the other a cover save. GW saw the flaw in this and FAQ'ed it so that whichever unit is providing cover to the other, that one doesn't get cover.

So, whichever unit is closest to the firing unit doesn't receive cover in this formation, no matter how much it is covered by the other unit.
