Hello Gentlemen (and Ladies):

I have a 100% dipped ork 2500 pt horde for 40k that are painted slightly above table top quality IMHO. The dip I used is the "Minwax Polyshade Polyurethane." It has worked well, giving them an orky grime and a hard protective shell so that I can store and transport them carelessly. The bases are black, but dipped as well. So they are shiny/glossy and VERY smooth.

My idea for basing was the simple PVA/water recipe with sand and flock sprinkled on top. My concern is that the PVA won't stick to the polyurethane finish. Do you folks have any experience or suggestions?

Also, to take down the gloss and further seal the base, I was hoping to dull coat after the sand and flock. Seems like a bad idea... Suggestions for durability with respect to the basing?

Thanks,
DrG

Varnish after the sand and flock is a great idea - it locks the sand and flock in much better.

Can't comment on the PVA over minwax.

Agreed. I dip using Minwax and I varnish after the flock/foliage/etc now (didn't used to) and it really helps to keep things in place.

As for the PVA, I've found it sticks pretty well as long as you seal it with matte spray afterwards. If you're using sand, you can also use a very thin layer of thicks superglue, but that's problematic because sometimes you end up seing the glue marks after it dries.

If you're still worried about the PVA sticking, paint over the base with Gesso, then glue on top of that. Gesso will also give you nice "tooth" so that whatever paint you use on the edges of the base will adhere well.
