Looking to make a board and I was just wondering if any people knew a website where I could get reasonable sizes of flocking?

Also while you're here, any tips on making a swamp board, The other thing I was considering was a lava board. comments, criticisms and answers all appreciated.

You could try the tea bag or coffee grounds approach.

You could try Maelstrom here in the UK, I know they carry the large shakers of woodlands scenics flock, it works out quite cheap that way. The shakers hold just under a litre of flock and cost less than £7

Yeah, I'd suggest woodland scenics as a good deal compared to the GW or GF9 alternatives.

Alternatively, you can just paint wantered down PVA on the table, sprinkle sand, cornstarch or coffee grounds over the board and then paint and drybrush it whatever color you want

I went with a desert board and just got some sandstone textured paint from the hardware store. I painted the board with white housepaint to cover the grain and then just sprayed away!

For a swamp board, I'd really suggest doing a regular forest/field green board and then making separate swamp sections. Otherwise you're really stuck with one arrangement of swampland. Also, you can incorporate more reeds and tall grasses in the swamp section without having to make them permanent additions to the board.

A good looking swap board really needs to be made as one setup, i.e. not rearangable.

I can get you a picture of the one I did a few months ago, but that is going to have to wait until I get home. I can also let you know the companies that I used for more specilized flocking.

A swamp board is probably best done on a polystyrene base so you can carve out marshes. Arts and crafts stores are your friends to find fake ferns, moss, and small gauge wire. Use wire and a softer putty (aves sculpt) or bakable clay like FIMO to twist and shape into mangroves, creeping vines, and other swamp flora. Small amounts of fake grass can stand in for reeds or elephant grass. Paint the board a very dark brown like dark umber and flock sparingly. The ground should be wet and top soil heavy with patches of green rather than swathes. Like it's been uprooted by water or fauna. Water effects are pretty important you'll need to balance clear water with stagnant water. I color my stagnant water with medium hauser green.
For large amounts of flock sawdust obtained from home improvement stores that cut for the customer or school woodshops, sifted and mixed with paint and water is great for large boards. Miniwargaming built a board a while (years?) ago with a YouTube video including how to make sawdust flock.

I've picked up 100g bags of flock for less than GW sells their 20g tubs for - and I know they come in 500g bags also. 500g will last quite a while.

I buy my static grass in 100g bags.

Save yourself some money. Most terrain experts use www.scenicexpress.com. Their static grass is almost identical to GW, plus they have a ton of varieties. Woodland Scenics also works, but most of their stuff is not blended for a more natural look.

The stuff at scenic express looks very nice. I have seen the flock shaker used before and apparently it settles flock in more natural patterns, it was using woodland scenics flock which I agree does look a little...meh. But the shaker with 3 colors looked great when done.

You could cart away a bunch of buckets of beach sand. I know someone that did that and they said it worked fairly well.

So if anybody has any tips for making a swamp board could you please share.

I would like to suggest a little trick I learned doing an architectural model some years ago for your swap...

Swaps need reed beds and an easy way of modeling these is to take a cheap wallpaper paste brush and a small pool of pva woodglue. poor woodglue onto something it won't stick to (like a plastic ice cream tub lid) then place your paste brush so that it stands on it's bristles in the glue and allow to dry. when totaly dry cut the bristles away from the glue at the rough high that's right for your scenery. after applying a can of green spraypaint you have tall grass, a light brown and you have reeds light brown and tipped with dark brown flock and you have those wierd flammible reeds (bull thrushes or something I think they're called.)

If you trim the brush very carefully you can get two or even three rows of reeds from each brushhead.
