So my question is, which is the best all around super heavy tank variant. I know it depends on what I need it to do, but I am looking for the "swiss army knife" variant.

Thanks!

Personally, I think the Shadowsword is the best. It fires a Strength D extra-large blast template which can wreck pretty much anything.

This. I have one and it's always done me proud. A Baneblade wouldn't go amiss either.

Can you use IG tanks with SMs? If so Shadow sword is probably the best option. If you can't, 3 vindicators works extremely well.

Further still I could feel its primogenitor coldly assessing me from the void. And looking back from the deepest recesses of the aliens mind I perceived what I can describe only as an immortal hunger.
We can slay the tyranids on our worlds, blast their fleets from space, grind their armies to torn and ruined fragments. But their hunger? That is beyond our ability to slay."

If this is geared towards Apoc games, I would recommend the regular Baneblade, it has a turreted main weapon and an extra demolisher cannon, just incase somebody chose to destroy your main gun, which is most often the case

Blessed is the mind too small for doubts.

What does everyone think of the Doomhammer or Stormlord. They have Transport ability that the Shadowsword lacks. But The Shadowsword seems to have a better gun.......

Stormlord, not that good considering it's only BS3. Doomhammer, well can't say I have had experience with it, personally, I would use the Baneblade, Shadowsword or Stormsword.

If i recall correctly, Stormlord is the one with the vulcan mega blasters, right? if so, it chews right through infantry units and the lascannons for anything bigger! Really good tank, used it once and it lasted the whole game killing nearlly 3 squads of Orks and a killakan! If you don't move you can use it's beast of a gun TWICE!!!

EDIT: missed iportant info...put some heavy wepons teams with lascannons for extra killy on top or just 20 gaurdsmen with lasguns (still killy!) And just look at how many heavy bolters there are!

Yes, you don't move and you get 30 shots...at BS3. With an average of 15 hits, I would prefer the Stormblade or Stormsword to this. Higher strength, lower Ap, and 10" Blasts (or 2 7" for the Stormblade)? Much better!

I believe that Baneblades are the 'swiss-armyknife' supa-heavy tank out there..... It can take care of both infantry and tanks with relative ease. The only problem is that it is never super good at one thing besides attracting firepower.

Why buy expensive 40k at retail price?

Shadowswords are where it is at. Strength D will blast the face off anything stupid enough to get hit. The lascannons and heavy bolters are just there to deal with the nonsense that comes from the flanks.

Thank you all for the advise. I have narrowed it down to the Shadowsword (love the Str. D gun) or the Baneblade. Right now the baneblade has a slight edge due to the turret mounted main gun, and extra guns (mainly the D cannon). I kinda feel like the Baneblade would be better suited to advance with he rest of my army, but the shadowsword does look sweet....

I got a shadowsword for my mech/armored apoc list. Each shot killed stuff, in every game i set it up, while it got destroyed only once in 4 games. Now i know i've been lucky a few many times, but even if i take worse luck into account it has certainly paid off three times every game. There's nothing as funny as touching all those immortal units out there with a D blast. Landraiders? SS termis? Monoliths? all dead. Plus you sometimes really need Strength D when people come up with super heavies themselves. If you take a thought competitively the shadowsword is even obligatory since you got no other source for S D. Take it, dammit, just take it !!!

LOL, thanks for the convincing. I have chosen to go with the Shadowsword. Now I just need to round up the funds for one...... Thanks again to all who helped! I will try to post pictures of it with the rest of my army when it is done(probly not till at least Dec.)
