I've updated my Codex application for iPhone application http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/391712.page to run on any iDevice after OS 3.2, including iPhone 3, iPads and the (US) Verizon iPhones.

http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/icodexnecron/id456038472?ls=1&mt=8

The update was supposed to include the unit category table sections (HQ, Elite, Troops, etc) as suggested by various forum members, but I'm sorry, I spent all night fixing it, and then somehow managed to leave it out of the release package. :(

I do still need help in several areas.

i) Checking the text of this app. (which I posted about elsewhere, but have now deleted the thread for fear of spamming!). If anyone can find the time to help out, I will send them a file with all the content, and they will need to go through it and check it for accuracy, correcting any errors or omissions.
ii) People wanting codices for their preferred armies as opposed to just old Necrons, will likewise need to help out with content, and should contact me asap.
iii) I need a graphic designer/artist to help out with icons and images; you'll get the idea for what's required from this app, and there will be plenty of scope for collaboration and stretching yourself creatively.

The app is free so there's nothing to be earned for any of these efforts, but the appreciation of your fellow gamers, the respect of your friends, and a name check in the credits is, I'm told, absolutely priceless.

Legal Note:

Please be aware that Games Workshop are advised of this application, and I have discussed it with their legal team. My original application (an army calculator using this codex as a template) was not authorized, but some latitude was provided to release an app. generally.

In strict accordance with their instructions, I made suitable alterations to my original application and released it as this Necron Codex for the iPhone. The original calculator application will also see the light of day, suitably altered, in a few weeks.

Disclaimer: the conception, design and program code of these apps belong to me, but all content which belongs to GW is used without challenge and without seeking profit from their legal property (and with my thanks, and greatest respect to their artists, designers and copy writers). This disclaimer has been prominently positioned in the application.

I will not reply to posts asking about the legal status therefore, but if people wish to discuss the matter generally, they should start a thread and I will be glad to take part.

I'm pleased to say the designer/collaborator position has been filled from the ranks of DakkaDakka already!

I still need help with checking copy for the existing Necron codex, and am interested in offers of work on other codices.

The app looks awesome. Any chance we might see this come to Android at some point?

How you EVER managed to come to a reasonable accommodation with GW Legal is beyond my powers of divination. My hat is off to you sir!

Yes, and given the right format, they'll slot right in. But as indicated, I do need help creating the content, because I just don't have the time myself.

Copying the content is a trivial, but time consuming task and for your interest, this iPhone Codex for Necrons was partly chosen because it's the smallest Codex with only 13 units. But each has a unit profile (WS, BS, etc) and references to an average of four weapons, options and special rules. The application lists 14 options, 57 special rules, 27 weapons and 8 general rules. I can't remember how long it took me to do it, but as the previous thread attests, I got about 20% of it wrong anyway!

So if anyone is keen to see their favourite army on the iPhone, I will send them the Necron copy I created, and they could work from that on whichever codex they're interested in. But please not that at that point, there's no guarantee that GW will allow the public release, as they've did with this one, so I can only offer to provide them their own personal copy at no cost in return. Ah, go on; you know you want to!

Look to update the deceivers deceive ability, there is an error there concerning how many units he can move.

There is an update with corrections in the pipeline, but I'd missed that one - thank you.

If it was going to cross over on to Android systems I would have no problem running through the Tau; (I have an irrational hatred for Apple and their products) however, just apple and I can't bring myself to do it.

<grin>People here have suggested that I move this to Android, since it's less restrictive than iOS. But of course the stumbling block will be whether GW give their blessing in the long run*, not what Apple do or don't do with iOS and the App Store.

In our second month, and third or fourth round of talks this week, with downloads going well and the community being almost entirely positive, it seems unlikely they'll let me make Version 2, I'm afraid. I'm sure no-one's surprised.

Are you developing for Android yourself, then?

I'd like to help out. If you could send me a copy of the code I'd be very grateful. Did you use Core Data or just NSDictionary objects for the stats?

Sorry for the delayed response. No, little busy to get into learning how to set all that up right now. If anything, I'd just scan pertinent pages and stick them in a pdf I could run on my phone. That gets really iffy in terms of sharing though. Actually, its not really all that iffy. Its probably a very poor decision .

Well, yes. Companies that are wedded to earning revenue from their products will be harmed by that activity, and that will harm their ability to produce more games, sadly.

On the other hand, it's already happening, probably can't be stopped, and unless GW want to become to rulebooks and codices what Metallica were to album recordings, they'll need to change their business model or produce some really excellent alternative of their own.
