Just curious, among you dakkanauts, what would you be most likely to buy as a commissioned piece?

Buildings? Woods? Hills? Rivers? Themed sets? Entire boards?

Thanks.

Buildings for me. The biggest issue would be that they need to look like something I couldn't easily make myself.

You won't make any money on terrain. It's the simple truth. Folks won't pay what it costs (in terms of time) to make. It's hard enough with the high-end figure paintwork, but for terrain itself, nah.
Case in point: I can put together some 'nice' woods for about £8 per stand (of 3 trees approx 15cm tall) IN MATERIALS, then I have a couple of hours of time (assuming I'm doing several). It boils down to over £20 for a stand of 3 trees, to make it worth my time doing.

Let me correct that just slightly, you wont make much money on terrain, especially just starting out. But it really is a lot like commissioned figure/army painting, in that what you can earn can vary greatly depending on your skill level, presentation, professionalism, and most especially the quality of your work and your reputation.

I would strongly suggest building terrain for fun and personal use, put absolute best effort into it, publish it somewhere where people can see your work, and gauge the interest from there. You might even get a commission request right away depending on those aforementioned factors. Oh, and while you're doing that, be sure to keep track of how much time went into your work, and what you spent on materials, and use these factors to decide how much to charge.

This, it took me years upon years until I found my way of doing terrain fast and good. Still, you won't ever get your times worth of money out of it, ever. Do it for fun, do it for your own gaming tables.

As to what people would buy: My experience is that most people who actually have the money to dump on good terrain and the will to do so will prefer buying an entire tables worth of themed terrain as opposed to assorted not-together-fitting-stuff.

I don't want to be human! I want to see gamma rays! I want to hear X-rays! And I want to - I want to smell dark matter! Do you see the absurdity of what I am? I can't even express these things properly because I have to conceptualize complex ideas in this stupid limiting spoken language! But I know I want to reach out with something other than these prehensile paws! And feel the wind of a supernova flowing over me! And I can know much more! I can experience so much more. But I'm trapped in this absurd body!

Thanks guys for your replies. I wasn't really sold on trying to sell it in the first place, really I was just interested in seeing what people aren't as interested in making themselves. I'm not gonna lie, I think my terrain is pretty nice, but with people like terraformer out there, I doubt I could get even close to the following he has.
