Hello all,
Been a while since I've been on here much... We've spent most of our wargaming time and $$ lately on PP's line. But my son likes the marines I have for some reason, so in playing army men with him, I got to thinking. There has to be a way to get more out of the AOBR bosed set. We ended up with two, and now have roughly 1500 pts of Marines and Orks, but my wife and I got overwhelmed with the # of models to paint, along with the charts, stats, and whatnot that needs to be committed to memory to play the game. The Black Reach set gives a good overall impression on how the game plays, and will let you get some of the basic mechanics of the game down, but some more dice, a few option bits, and 2 legal armies would have made it much better. The orks actually get a decent start to an army, the Warboss makes the Nobs count as the 2nd Troop Req. The Deffkoptas are nice, and great looking models. The points could be brought up to closer to the SM side with a few things like PKs and a few kitted nobs, or buzzsaw bit. The SM basically need another box of troops just to have a legal army, I guess you could make them 2x5man squads, but not really with what's in the box... there's another reason a few bits would be nice. I hope the next starter has some options. The Termies need ML option. I plan to use the models, basically all of them, so it's a great deal overall... you just don't get as much of a feel for the Space Marines army as you do with the Orks.
It's hard for me and my wife to find time lately for a 2-3 hour gaming session, so we've mostly been painting and playing Warmachine, but I got to looking into rules like Kill Teams, Combat Patroll and such, and decided to try and come up with a good way to get more out of the AOBR boxed set. Let Me know what you guys think.

Black Reach : Black Opps.

My goal, is a good way to get more "learning" and fun out of AOBR. This should also be OK played with other factions. This should be in the 450-750 pts. range, and I have lists @ 450 from the AOBR models. My goal is not to change the mechanics of the game, as I'd like to be getting more familiar with 40k, not less... so I made just a few changes that should provide a flexible, fun, quick game, and be fairly balanced, I hope...LOL

This game can be played on a 3'x4', 4'x4', or larger table, but I am trying to make the game more suited to smaller spaces, shorter timeframes, and such, so I recommend using a skirmish sized table, but still giving some separation in DZ's... I use a 4' deep space mostly, but an average dining table, or decent sized coffee table could be made to work. I use Pitched Battle or Table corners mostly, and it still seems to be playable with the standard missions and scenarios, I also find it fun to play untill someone is wiped out or surrenders. With no turn limit or rolling for those last turns... it makes a new dynamic, and still won't take forever. This also makes for some fun with Missions/Objectives... either you get to here and do x, or I wipe you out, or... but no ... well turn 5 is over and I did, but didn't... and you did ... but this was contested... so it's a draw... Play till there's a winner, or a loser graciously bows out. That alone will change tactics I think.

Basic rules all remain, I really want this to still be 40K. I have altered the FOC to make building lists at 450-750 more flexible. I hope this will be fair/balanced... this is where I need input..
-NO HEAVIES or MONSTEROUS CREATURES
-ONLY 1 HQ AND 1 TROOP MANDATORY
-MAX 1xHQ 2xTROOPS 1xELITE AND 1xFAST ATTACK ALLOWED
-ONE ELITE "INFANTRY" UNIT MAY COUNT AS A TROOPS CHOICE, AND ALSO BE SCORING.
-??? ALL "INFANTRY" MODELS COUNT AS SCORING??? (UNSURE ABOUT THIS, AND WHETHER TO INCLUDE JUMP INFANTRY)
-NAMED CHARACTERS OK (this makes fluffy lists still doable, and gives more flexibilty)
-???Transports??? I'd like to have rhinos, and basic transports avail... unsure how to do this... list em all out? I don't want Land Raiders and such though... Limit it to a pts level like 50? Limit AV?

so , let me know what you all think!!!!!

Lists I've been using to test this out:

Marines: Capt. with Power Sword and Hellfire Rds.
"Alpha Squad" 5x Sternguard, "Omega Squad" 5x Termies (you can choose which is the scoring troops unit)

Orks: Warboss, TL Shoota, PK, Pole, Eavy Armor, and Ammo Runt...(you can use a penny or whatever token you like, I have a grot holding a stikkbomb... not important..

comes to 450(mehreeens) and 448 (Orks) so far the few times I've tried it it's been fun, and I like to be proxying the Sternguard, gives me some more insight into my army and lets me learn some more rules I'm not used to. I hope this would make for decent lists in the other codexes as well... Hope to hear some input.

The Combat Patrol, from Adepticon, has rules for small games.

Check them out Here

With that said, your rules are very similar to the Combat patrol rules.

P.S. this should be in the proposed rules forum :-)

Thank you, we will be using rules very similar to the ones you linked, if not those actual rules...
there is a store somewhat close to me, that is trying to get some gaming going, I'm going to hope that these help...
a grow league to get people started will be good, and let people play that haven't collected many models yet.
once we're up to like 750 we could use the regular rules...

Thanks again for the input, sorry if this is in the wrong forum...

I would allow heavies, because it lets you bring, at least what I think, are some of the more "fun" units. Like Basilisks.

40k: IG "The Poli-Aima 1st" ~3500pts (and various allies)
