If anyone knows a thing or two about the feral hog population, then you understand that they are something of a nuisance that needs to be removed. Well, I'm looking to get into leatherworking, and since hog is always in season, I figure why not start blasting away. Doing the world a favor anyways. Problem is, for being such a nuisance here in texas, it's downright impossible to find someone who will let you freely remove them. They want to charge you like 100 bucks at least to use their property to hunt hogs. This makes little sense to me, it's like charging someone to help you fix a fire ant problem or termites.
So the question is, how would one go about hunting hogs if everyone expects you to give them money for it?

start an "exterminator" type business. People pay good money to have termites and other insect nuisances removed from their home/property, so you set yourself up as offering the same service.

It is on their property, so what is the problem with honoring that? Try public land, less convenient but the same thing I suppose.

This makes little sense to me, it's like charging someone to help you fix a fire ant problem or termites.
It's like charging someone who wants to fix my insect problem with gasoline and a match.
You want me to let someone I don't know, onto my land (You know, that place where the people I give a crap about stay, and all my stuff is) to fling supersonic and/or razor sharp pieces of metal around, and I should do it for free? Sorry buddy, I want to see an ID, an address, and some cash in case I need to -begin- repairs on replacing any No-shoot animals/items that wind up with some new speed holes.
There is simply no way to know whether you are one of those hunters with <CENSORED> wired tight, or if you are the beer drinking "DARE HUNTAR" types with an itchy trigger finger and an aim like a palsy wracked epileptic that is going to make my animals go missing and start putting holes in things that really don't need them...unless I roll the dice, or get to know you personally. This is in addition to the usual crap of letting someone onto your land, they manage to get themselves hurt, and try to give you legal issues for your trouble.
Make friends with some ranchers. If they give you the nod, my experience has been that you can get a -Lot- of hunting done. Just be careful, if the hogs are like the ones I was after you tended to find them in groups of 6-12, usually only you and them noticing each other about 20-25 feet away in the brush. They may decide that you are tasty looking rather than scary.
Last time I went, the friend who owned the ranch came along. Here I am in the dark with my little AK in the two man enclosed treestand, and a hog waddles up close enough I could've drawn my revolver, thrown it, and hit the thing. He wants to take the shot. I give him the OK, and he proceeds to take his giant rifle with the hubble space telescope on top, and clang it against the fiberglass walls of the stand until the hog got smart and ran while attempting to get the muzzle out of the firing port. One of the reasons I brought the AK was because the <CENSORED> thing is -short-...

What this man said (emphasis mine).
If you want to hunt for free to supply and support your leather-working hobby/business, go to a public location that allows hunting.

Yeah, I talked to a guy on craigslist who was advertising hog removal. He pretty much echoed what you guys have said, that being it's all about people letting you on to their land. I can understand why you would be wary about letting anything short of an established exterminator business on your land, but even if I know someone really well, I'll never pay someone to remove their problem. Let the hogs destroy their land for all I care if they want to take that approach.
Still, now I've got a direction to go now, thanks for the input everyone.
Edit - Well, no, one more thing. If I'm willing to do the job for free, and I'll handle the cost from gas and bullets, what kind of business would that make me? sounds non-profit, but that can't be right.

I'm not being argumentative, Necroshea. But, if I were in a position to get rid of feral hogs on my land.
1. I'd do it myself.
2. I'd ask any one of the employees at my plant and I'd have someone I knew do it for free.
3. I'd call any number of family members and make a weekend of it.
I'm just saying I, personally, would have a lot of options.
Further, like the craigslist add, I could easily post "$100 to hunt my land" and would have a list a mile long within a day.
Sorry to disappoint, man. But it's simple supply and demand. There are plenty of people that would pay to hunt, you know?

All information is simply that, information. Being good or bad is entirely dependant on how I make use of it. What strikes me as odd is that the situation you talk about makes a lot of sense. Someone usually knows someone who can do the job, or they can do it thesmelves. If that's the case though, why is it such a big problem? Not arguing, I'm genuinely curious why reports are always saying hogs are rapidly growing in size, the destruction they've caused it great, etc. etc. yet people still want you to pay them to get rid of them. I guess they simply don't care/more than enough people willing to pay to do it.
I've also seen some people say to ask a game warden to allow you to hunt them on public land at night. Would that be a viable route?
Also, since the point is all about the leather (not to say I wouldn't eat them. Love pork). Anyone know a good source of leather besides pigs? Cow leather isn't exactly free and it's not like I can hunt them, lol.

After taking an introductory course on agriculture, I do realize that
1. Hogs in my state are a problem (no season, huzzah!)
2. Charging money to hunt on one's property is standard business. It can cost quite a bit to run those places privately and not to mention all the legal stuff like licensing, insurance, etc. Contrary to popular belief, a lot of hunting these days in most 1st world countries is a very organized affair. Its all about the welfare of both the hunter and the person who owns the land.

Not getting what you're trying to do.
1. If its public land then you can't hunt there unless specifally agreed to by the government and thats usually for vermin control.
2. If its private thats a hog lease. Thats why they want you to pay for it.

Absolutely. There are open ranges (public land) in Texas where you can hunt wild hogs.
I'm not a hunter, so I'm not sure where to tell you to get started.
Best of luck, man!

Go to wal-mart, head to the sporting goods department, pick up the little fish and game booklet with this years hunting regulations in it. They should still be free. Gun shops may or may not have them on hand. If nothing else I am sure you can request one/find online, i'd be shocked if Texas F&G didn't have a website.
