I am thinking of building a complete deathwing company, so this got me thinking, how many dreadnoughts would a chapter have, on average? I would have though that the newer the chapter the less dreds, but just how many?

23,75
Dreads are not available in company sized numbers usually, so on average the chapter with a standard organization structure and a decent access to such tech may have 2 per company.

I think if you look at the MTOEs published in various codexes and articles the average is about 2 per company except the scouts so a minimum of 9 (1per) and a maximum of probably 36 (4 per) although if some are kept in statis while others are active you could easily double the high and see 72 with half in stasis and awoken from attrition. I have to think that despite how easy they get rocked on the table in fluff those wiley old men are probably tough as hell to kill.

Interesting. Based on the sugestions I think I will go for 4 in my company as, well, it is the Deathwing who are probably going to have as many as anyone, given the age of the chapter, and the fact that I figger Deathwing members are more likely to be deamed heroic enough to be saved than most.
That and I currently have 25 termies and one dred, so it fits well.

Generally, each Company will have between 1-5 Dreadnoughts. Dreadnoughts traditionally stay with their Company of origin.
Dreds of significant age and experience will sometimes be promoted to the 1st company.
so a chapter could have between 9-45 dreadnoughts.
IIRC, the BAs have more Dreadnoughts then normal. around 60.
