I don't have my WoC codex handy atm...

I do not think Gateway uses the phrase "This is a direct damage spell" or "This is a magic missile". Correct me if I am wrong there. I don't see anything in the FAQ.

If it does not use either of those lines, then you need to come to an agreement with your gaming group in regards to how to play these until an official FAQ is released. According to page 31 of the BRB "some unique spells, or spells that are printed in older Warhammer Armies books, do not have a type - their text will contain any casting restrictions that apply." That means that Gateway will contain all of its restrictions within the text of the spell. Now I am not sure thats what GW intended to have happen, but arguing RAI is a pointless endeavour.

That thread has a small discussion in regards to what a few of us think has occured with the current ruleset. Basically, you would be hard pressed to find someone who doesn't see this as an oversight by GW, or at the very least, a very poorly written rule.

Personally, I would use the rules for Direct Damage spells as Gateway seems to mirror that type the most out of the 5, but I realize that is a houserule. I am sure tournies will have their own interpretations of the rules, and if this question is for a tournament, ask the TO. If its not for a tournament, come up with rules that are the most fun for your gaming group.

Its highly unlikely that the issues with several spells in several books will be corrected until they get updated codices.

2,500 - Discipline. Duty. Unyielding Will.
2,000 - He alone has the Emperor's soul in his blood.
2,500 - Order. Unity. Obedience.

As above.

GW *probably* cocked this up, and meant to add "additional" to the phrase Lehnsherr quoted, so you follow the BRB restrictions and then the spells restrictions, if any. Unfortunatley they did not, so RAW any spell without a type can be freely cast in all directions and into combat.

Gateway, like all the other Tzeench spells that do damage, can be cast into combat since it doesn't have a type or any restrictions.

it just says "pick a unit within X"

Will it be changed when the book is redone, heck yeah. but the 8th ed rule book specifically allows Gateway to cast into combat by saying spells without types will have their own restrictions(in this case, none except distance from caster)
