Okay, I've just started playing WH40K and I am getting fairly good at it. Me and a friend bought AoBR and I played SM. My query is this: i have seen so many variations of models, i.e. sergeant, sergeant with storm bolter and chainsword, sergeant with heavy bolter and power fist. These all sound like good combos and I read them up in the codex and like them even more, but are you supposed to buy like 300 of every model and put magnets in everyone? This just seems time and money consuming. If anyone has an answer please tell me!!!!! Thanks :-)

No you dont need a ton. My advice is use the counts as rule for proxies. If you notice you love to take one setup, invest in that model and so on. Remember you can only take so many sgt. I dont know the number but im sure it cant be over 10 or 12

Once you have figured out how you want your army to work, you'll know what kinds of equipment you want characters to have and what kinds of weapons you want squads and tanks to have, and build models accordingly. There's also options and combinations you'll never want to even try out.

Generally though, as said, if you want to try something for a game or two, people won't mind usually if you just say your sergeant with chainsword has a powerfist.

You don't need every option all the time. While I have a spare sergeant with a power sword or plasma pistol here and there, I generally run all my Marine sergeants with powerfists. I gear each squad to a specific goal and I occasionally have some leftover Marines who I'll give various special equipment. You can keep it pretty simple from there.
