one of my dogs, a beagle/dachsund/bordercollie mutt, has been horibly ill lately, he is six years old and was diagnosed where Canine Erliciosis. bein a veterinary student I sespected this, but we took him ot the local vet anyways.

We teated him, everything went fine, then about two days ago, he became worse. his legs are bent and he is trying to keep weight off of them, he seems to have nerve damage in his rear paws, he drools constantly and refuses to touch dog food. I have to give him half my lunch so he does not starve to death.

what really worries me is that these can be symptoms of Rabies, his booster shots he got when we left the states have just run out. so now we have to keep him and Sandy, (My other dog) apart, just in case he is rabid.

whenever he looks at people he has this pleading look in his eyes like he is suffering majorl y and hinks that being around people can make him feel better.
so right now, he has sleep crusting his eyes, he cannot walk, and long goopy strands of drool arehangng form his mouth.

I'm pretty depressed, he was given to me by a friend many years ago who could not keep him becasuse of his alllergies. he had picked him up in a kill shelter and he was due for extermination that day. all in all, this dog has been my buddy for many years and now he seems ot be dying.

I'm sorry to hear that, I'm not a vet, but, I can tell you from experience that rabid dogs do have those symptoms, however, the fact the he isn't trying to attack you should be a sign. Don't be fooled, small rabid dogs are just as vicious as large dogs, and the fact he's unable to walk could mean a lot of things, but, I'm not sure it's rabies.

As for my knowledge of rabies, rabid animals are unaware of their surroundings and settings, which explains why rabid raccoons walk around in daylight, they're very violent, and are willing to even attempt to attack someone far larger, and armed.

My advice would be to take him to the vet a.s.a.p, and hope for the best, in the meantime, avoid table scraps, and provide plenty of fresh water and a place for him to lay.

I'm sorry for your situation. My previous dog was 15 when he suddenly could no longer walk and was spasmy, and would not eat. I took him to the vet and wound up putting him down. It's a horribly painful decision to make but you have to be resolute in your mercy, if it comes to that.

Has there not been a second trip to the vet, since the situation worsened? Because that would be the place to start.

Very sorry to hear about your dog....

our previous dog looked exatly like that, and she had a brain tumor and died from that.

It might be lyme disease, vets ometimes dont spot that and say its soething else. Thats what my mom say at least.

LOOK!! a shameless self-promotion! (gasp!)

I'm no vet, but I have been told by many that if a dog won't eat, it's really, really bad, since eating is their most favorite thing in the world to do.

My GF is going through a real tough time with her 7 year old king james cavalier (something like that) .. she's got liver failure. started a few months ago when she got more fussy with her dog food and really only went for treats. Then wouldn't go outside to go to the bathroom often and instead would hold it all day and just go once a day. At first they thought it was just collitis or something like that, but after the internal medicine vet saw her they figured out it was liver failure, and she really doesn't have much longer now...

Sorry to hear about your pooch. Take him to the vet asap.

well, we took him to the vet (Same one where I work) and the vet said he looks almost eight to ten years old, his gums and teeth are showing signs of age, the American clinic said he is still 6 os I got no clue.

anyways, they figured out that the 'drool' is actually nasal discharge, so they took a stool sample, his temp, and had to hook him up to an IV because of his low fluid intake.

he still has eirlichiosis and animea, but now we have to take him there once a day to get an IV drip, mainly sugar water and VC.

I did not spend much time holding him down so he wouldn't flip out and savage the others for sticking a bunch of needles in him, there was another dog that had been hit by a car as well as a recurring mouth tumor case that demanded my attention.

Sorry to hear about your dog. I'm not Vet, but you should give him a lot of attention, and care. Is it just one type of Dog Food that he refuses to eat?

I don't have a dog, but our 10 year old cat, Shelia because she has a black spot on her nose that looks like Australia, just got diagnosed with chronic heart failure. She's had a murmur for years, but it seems its developed into something serious. Its a real shame too. She freaks about everything and may be the most timid cat we've ever had.

Still, shes sweet and well behaved. More well behaved than the other one. We're hoping she goes peacefully rather than have a heart attack or something painful.

Good luck to you and your dog (hopefully whatever is wrong can be averted. Shelia has no hope sadly ). Never pleasant losing a member of the family.
