Hello all,

I have a question about the best way to build up a 1500 point list of Imperial Guard.

A friend of mine wanted to get rid of some old Catachan boxes he had lying around, so I bought it of him.
In total, it contains:

30 Catachan Jungle Fighters (non-assembled)
1 Leman Russ Battle Tank (heavy bolter sponsons. lascannon/multilaser, no other weapons)
2 Scout Sentinels (multilaser/heavy flamer only)
3 Catachan Snipers Team (3 models)
1 Catachan Demolitions Team (2 models)
1 Catachan Heavy Flamer Team (2 models)

Now, what I am mainly looking for is some pointers to expand on this as economically as possible.

I figured I could go with 30 veterans, buy some separate plasma cannons and Chimera's and a Command Squad as HQ.
Is this a good way to start with? What do I do with the Heavy Flamers and especially the snipers?

Would be nice to make it kind of fluffy, but it's not an absolute requirement.
II have no high expectations of this project, just a fun list, not extremely competative.
I am mainly playing Vanilla Marines, Mech Orkz, Decent of Angels Blood Angels.

Thanks for your input!

Edit: I am not looking for an exact list, mainly for help with the tactic to set up this list.

Probably work

To be honest, there's not much you can do with that on it's own. With a purchase of a command squad and 2-3 packs of the pewter weapons from GW's site, and 4 chimeras, you could probably have a decent start on mechvets.

Sadly, the heavy flamers and snipers aren't going to really do too much. I have about 6 snipers sitting around myself. Maybe sniper rifles will get coolers in 6th edition...

I'd do the following:

CCS, 4 plasmas, chimera with HHF
Vet squad, 3 plasmas, chimera with HHF
Vet squad, 3 meltas, chimera with HHF
Vet squad, 3 meltas, chimera with HHF

scout sentinel, multilaser

scout sentinel, multilaser (order bitz or convert one)

LRBT with heavy bolter sponsons (replace the lascannon with a heavy bolter)

That gives you a pretty good spread of anti-tank and anti-horde. Consider outflanking the sentinels against SM for opportunistic shots at blood angels. Unfortunately, it's not very catachan like, but you could be from another Rambo planet that uses a lot more armor, or something, maybe?

Vets are a great suggestion.

Another way to go is to make them a powerblob by building three of the models into sergeants with power weapons, combining the three squads. and adding a commissar. You can paint them all the same if the blob will always be deployed as is. Alternatively, paint them in groups of 9 plus sergeant in different color schemes, so you can combine the squads as you please.

Yet another idea is to buy a new box that would be the Catachan equivalent of Cadian Shock Troops. The box has a lot of special weapons - more than you need to assemble the 12 guys or so coming with it. The extra special weapons can be used on the unassembled group of 30 that you already bought. That is a good way to get a lot of models with special weapons at relatively low price. Then you can group the 42 models as 3x14. Each group of 14 should contain 1 sergeant, 10 guys with lasguns, and 3 guys with special weapons. That way, each group can be configured as a vet squad with 3x special weapons and a sergeant, or as an infantry squad of 1 sergeant and 9 lasguns or 1 sergeant, 1 special weapon, and 8 lasguns. Just be sure to paint each group of 14 in its own color scheme.

Would the demolitions upgrade be worthwile for the vet squads?

I personally see it as a waste of points. if you have it on 4 squads, you could almost get a 5th squad for the points.

I don't normally take it. I've heard plenty of theorycrafting on taking it on a squad inside a Valkyrie, then scouting the Valk, and first turn disembarking/charging with the vets, but to be fair, I've never done it. I'd think that 3 meltas would be cheaper and just as good, though I guess part of the allure is that you actually autohit with the melta bombs (assuming you went first) as the other stuff hasn't moved unless it scouted.

I definitely wouldn't take it for the demo charge alone.
