So I am finshing up my DA army and I am completing my last terminators. When I was reading the DA history I noticed that the terminators used to be black before the battle with the Tyranids. After this battle they went to the now bleached bone. So I was thinking about doing my last squad of terminators in black to represent these terminators of the old days. What do you think... am I way off on this???

Well, the bone color is supposed to be paying respect to their predecessors. It could be cool, but on the other hand it would kinda mean they're not paying respect to them. Also, black is really boring to paint and highlight, especially considering how many options you have with bone.

All my DA are going to be pre-heresey black.
So I say, go for it!

to be 100% though you will have to fill in the broken sword (cause I think it represents the Luthor rebelion)

I've got an all Black Deathwing army of about 30 terminators, a TermiChaplain, and a Belial model. It's pretty good stuff. I just explain the lore to my friends, and tell them that my army never lost to the Tyranids. I'm thinking about getting a couple of Contemptor dreads to go with the oldschool theme, but Contemptor dreads are as much as Land Raiders pointswise. Also a black Deathwing goes very well with a black Ravenwing. A standard DA paintjob has too many colors - green, red, bone, black, dark grey -confusing to the eye.

My swords stay broken. Luther rebelled, but we still stomped the bugs! I think my onlyquestion is whether I paint one of my Land Raiders from green to black. Same for the dreadnaughts.

To the best of my knowledge (ttbomk?) its never stated whether its before or after the Heresy that they defeat the Nids. So you could more then easily get away without filling it in.

Hey I really appreciate all the feedback as a few of my game buddies thought it was ridiculous, but I really enjoy the lore that goes along with the armies as well. I have worked hard on the other bone deathwing terminators, but I just thought it would make this unit really stand out if they were different. My thinking is the old school, battle hardened Veterans unit. I cannot recall if the battle occurred Pre-Heresy or not! Mighty, I agree with you about too many colors. My next project is going to Belial and the Chaplain which should compliment the unit nicely! Hey Mighty do you have any posted pictures of your Army?

I honestly hate GW's Retcon of the Deathwing Story.

I have played 40k from second edition to now and this includes the original space hulk and expansions one of which was called Deathwing. Great expansion. In the original story something like 15 members of the 1st company return to their homeworld to do recruitment for a new batch of sky warriors. They return home to find that the great plainsmen tribes that they used to know where diseased and mutated into a Genestealer cult and had been that way for about 90 years. The Marines want revenge and in accordance to their home worlds customs they cover their "Black Armor" in white and then take on their old names. They go after the genestealers and their patriarch (the first genestealer of the cult) and win when the librarian in uses his force weapon and decapitates the Patriarch but dies as a martyr to allow his battle brothers a chance at victory. The surviving members of the first company then cut down the entire genestealer cult in the mass confusion of the loss of their higher hive mind.

At the end the survivors take what people of their original tribes they could find with out mutations and restart their old ways of life as tribal leaders. Some time later (long enough that a marine has gone gray) The Dark Angels come looking for their missing brothers (remember 15 terminators are missing so about a third of the 1st companies TDA is MIA) and find them leading the tribesmen. They undergo an investigation and then it is decided that they should remain and in a 100 years the Dark Angels should return to start using this world as a recruitment world again. In tribute the armor of the first company was re colored to the bone that is now.

The original story from the expansion had some really great illustrations that went along with it. So the retcon versions is true from a certain point of view.

back on topic I say go with what ever you like. I personally like the look of the bone armor. but it gets a bit boring. maybe a mix some in black and a couple of squads in bone as a the first company has not been repainted completely.
