What do you think could work as an alternate model for a Russ? Ive been looking but haven't found anything great.

Honestly I tried to find something for ages, but ended up just using the regular russ model.

With some converting it actually looks rather impressive (rather than WWI-ish).

I am using helicopters for valkyries and realistic looking apcs for chimeras so do you think a modern MBT of the right scale could work? The entire army will have no GW models so a russ model would proably look even more out of place.

That's my personal favorite model. Mount a Leman Russ turret on that Chimera chassis. Simple and not quite so... boxy.

Depends what you want, really. There are plenty of options out there.

For my first IG army I painted it in wermacht colors and the Leman Russ tanks were PZIII and PZIV tanks of various models in 1/35 scale. Used PZIIs for Chimeras. Had a converted Brumbar assault howitzer for use as an armored griffon and a Hornisse set up for use as a Basilisk. Did some conversion work here and there to add 40k bits and parts to them. Sold off that army a while ago.

Now I am build a chaos renegade army and am once again using 1/35 scale WWII era kits as my vehicles. Using Japanese Chi-ha tanks as Chimeras. Have converted an Italian Semovente 75 and 2 Italian M13/40s into the 3 differnent Hellhound variants. Have a Japanese SPG for use as a basilisk. Also have a regular M4A2 sherman for a leman russ and one of the upgunned isreali sherman tanks for use as a leman russ vanquisher.

1/48th scalle is closer to 40k scale, but 1/48 scale kits of actual tanks look somewhat anemic next to GW tank models. I find that the 1/35 scale tanks just look much better on the table top.

The land of cotton.

What kind of look are you going for? WW2, Vietnam/Cold War, Modern?

Tell me what kind of helicopters and APCs you're already using and that will tell you what kind of tank models will fit in with them.

The advise about 1/35 vs 1/48 is good. 40K vehicles, like the soldiers, are "heroic" scale and are actually a mishmash of different scales for different features. Overall sizes are closer to 1/48 but guns, hatches and such are closer to 1/35th. Proportions are incredibly out of whack with all 40K vehicles being much too stubby, fat and tall compared to real vehicles. To some degree, this is a nod to gaming convenience.

I converted a 1/32 scale Mig15 to an Ork Fighta by sectioning it to make it shorter, chopping off the ends of the wings and tail to make it stubbier in all dimensions, and then the fuselage looked about right compared to the Ork pilot and comparable Forgeworld offerings. Doing the same thing with a 1/35 scale tank would be about right.

Sherman tanks are what I think of when I see the Russ. They are both short chassis tanks, just upgrade the cannon to a larger bore and you should be good to go.

The correct pronunciation is Imperial Guard and Stormtroopers, "Astra Militarum" and "Tempestus Scions" are something you'll find at Hogwarts.

Not a bad choice, Vaktathi.

Still resin, not cheap and bigger than a Russ.

A Russ, the Tank in the link in the middle, a guard officer on foot, a super-heavy based upon the baneblade chassis.

The tank is unpainted and has no sponsons and no turret, but the difference in size isn't small.

I'd use a 1/35 Tiger I for sponson less "real scale" russes. Blocky enough to count as imperial Tank.
