When planning an army, I bought a pot of GW codex grey paint, but looking in the pot, it looks somewhat lighter than I expected. I looked at the pictures of the the paints on the GW website and it looks darker than fortress grey. But looking at the paint in the pots, codex and fortress look almost identical. Does codex grey dry darker or is there another GW paint which is darker?

Please note, I am aware of addeptus battlegrey, but this is a foundation paint, which I do not use.

on the forum. Obviously

Yes, Codex grey is darker, but only very slightly. Try using some of it and compare it to fortress grey. You'll see that it's a shade darker.

Simple solution:
Take big pot of adequate gray, mix in black till you are satisfied with your base GK colour - use this.

Always what I do and saves a ton of money not having to buy 10 shades of the same colour when you can mix for free.

You'll often find that paints dry to a darker tone than they appear in the pot.

OR buy neutral grey (mixing grey) at the art store and mix it dark and light.

I noticed the same thing when I bought my last pot of codex grey. It does dry noticeably darker than Fortress Grey (which is also from a new pot).

This might sound like a silly question, but have you given the pot a good shake and stir before painting?

I find Codex Grey is one of the worst paints for pigment separation if it is allowed to stand for even a short length of time. If you are just looking at the pot then you will probably be looking at all lighter pigment stuck to the outside.

I ended up dropping a glass bead in mine so I could rattle it about and get the paint nicely mixed before using it.
