Hello,

I really want to improve my painting, and try out blending and layering for the highlights.

I'm doing Ultramarines (I know, I know!), I was just wondering what colors you use for blending into highlights? I've tried on a couple of spare parts, but not quite sure I'm getting the colors right, so looking for some inspiration! Pictures would be good too!

Thanks!

Generally it seems to be UM blue through to SW grey.

Try, mordian blue basecoat, UM blue panels, directed washj down into recesses with Asurmen blue (do not splosh wash).

When learning to blend / layer the washes are quite good - once you get the hang of directing them (ie using little on the brush, increasing the intensity of colour at the end of the stroke), you'll find the same technique being used for blending.

Thanks for the reply! I think I'll go and get some SW Grey and experiment with that.

I've just had a look through your Cool Mini or Not gallery, your Ultra's have pretty much the exact look I had in mind. Awesome stuff!!

There's a tutorial on how I paint them on my blog; covering sternguard and the zenithal highlighting airbrush technique.
