Hi everyone, I've got a question about the Stealth special rule. A friend of mine is playing IG and he has a unit with Gunnery Sgt. Harker. He has given these guys camo cloaks, which confer the stealth special rule on the unit.

The stealth special rule says that it improves the unit's cover saves by +1. The dispute that we are having is whether or not the unit must already be getting a cover save before the stealth quality will improve it.

I say that the stealth quality gives the unit a 6+ cover save all the time. My friend says that the unit must already be getting some kind of cover save (such as a 6+ cover save for going to ground) before the stealth rule "kicks in" and improves that cover save from 6+ to 5+. He says that the absence of any kind of cover save, due to being on open ground or something, cannot be improved by the stealth rule.

Does anyone know the official ruling? Thanks in advance!

Stealth improves cover saves. If you don't have a cover save there's nothing to improve.

The idea is that it takes extra effort and time to write properly, and they’d rather save the time. If you can still be understood, what’s the harm? While most of the time a sloppy post CAN be understood, the use of proper grammar, punctuation, and spelling is generally seen as respectable and desirable on most forums. It demonstrates an effort made to be understood, and to make your post an easy and pleasant read. By making this effort, you can often elicit more positive responses from the community, and instantly mark yourself as someone worth talking to.

Your friend is right in this Case as Lordhat stated; you cannot improve on something you don't have.

Open ground is not 7+ cover, it is no cover.

You get a 6+ for "going to ground" in the open.
Cloaks would improve THAT save to 5+.

They do not grant a 6+ by themselves.

Same principle works with Nemesis Force Swords. They improve an existing Invulnerable save, but do not grant an automatic 6+ if the model doesn't have one.

We're not very big on official rules. Rules lead to people looking for loopholes. What's here is about it.
