Well as the title states i have decided to play IG. Now that being said i have always played SM or WH and havent reli played IG since 4th (Currently in Iraq). I have an idea what i would like to play but im pretty sure it would be uncompetitive, thats where all of you come in. I dont have my codex on me right now so i cant type out the list seeing how i am fairly new to IG. But what i would like to include in my army are: 2-4 Basilisks, 2-4 Valkyries/Vendettas, 3-6 Veteran squads in Chimeras and maybe a few Sentinels (I know its fluff but i always liked the look of the models). Anything suggestions on what might b wrong or could be improved is greatly appreciated! Once i get my Codex i will update the thread to what i thought was a good list and you can hound me from there. I am pretty sure already no one likes the Bas and will suggest droping em for some Lemon Russ's.

Note: How effective are the Basilisks now? i remember playing against em back in 3rd and they where pretty good, that was also 2 editions ago and a different codex. But from what i remember they dont need LOS that is probli wrong now though.

You may honestly want to wait till you get your codex and properly post your list. I strongly suggest getting the base rule book as well.

But if your overseas and your not expecting to be home soon, 6th ed might come out before you get back and change everything that we tell you now.

Get home safe!

Been playing 40k on and off since 89.

I have all my rule books except Dark Angels with me in Iraq. I just dont have them on me, i was looking more towards a opinion on either or not Basilisks work and If 2-4 Valkyries is enough. I keep reading army lists that are either max Veteran squads with Plasma Guns and Melta Guns but i never see Basilisks in there. From what i remember they used to be pretty good. Also whens 6th coming out? i havent reali been up to date fully on 40k

well, instead of Valkyries, use Vendettas. They are amazing gunship platforms with 3 twin-linked Lascannons, and you can always put a troop choice inside for late game objective storming =D

So you told the SD boy to stay classy. I'm sure he's NEVER heard that one....

When used properly, sentinels can actually be well worth their points cost.

How many Vendettas should i run and should i do a squad of them or just 3? Like i stated before i think i have actually only played IG twice in 5th ed so my knowledge of them isnt the best.

If you're not using any other fast attack units, make them independent of one another. 3 TL lascannon shots is usually enough to kill a tank, and since squadron rules require that all models fire at the same target, it'd be a bit overkill. Plus if one gets immobilized, then it counts as being wrecked.

if you want vets in chimera's, i would take vendetta's to make them gunships and take 3 of them. works pretty good!

about the basalisks, you could take better artillery. take a look at the colossus, still wound marines at a 2+ and no saves! you only need a hit of the luck of snake eyes.

or take a look at manticores. i say it is the best artillery for tanks and infantery!

don't think, you have to know it if you want to be a commander
2010-> IG losses:5, draws: 1, wins: a really lot of wins
2011 IG losses: 2, draws: 1 wins: 32

Basilisks, still very good but under utilized in 5th.

Pretty much vendettas and banewolves. The vendetta is great for its cost, but everyone makes it such a high-priority target, that it usually doesn't last long enough to do anything great. Honestly, I like taking the units people rarely use, simply because people don't know how to play against them.

Vox are always good if you plan to issue orders. Just having the CCS means you can only issue 1 order a turn though. Never seen a Vet army before, it's a little differant but all total, it looks pretty interesting. Would love to see how it performs in battle.

You can not give Orders to units in vehicles, nor can you give Orders to vehicles. The only Vehicle you can give Orders out of are Chimeras due to their special 'Command Vehicle' rule.

Thus a CCS riding in a Chimera can issue up to two Orders a turn to infantry units, but can not give Orders to itself since it is inside the vehicle.

Thus drop the Voxs, Extra Armor, and Medi-pack. Get two more Plasma guns for your CCS and call it a day. Take the remaining 50pts and get Enclosed Crew compartments on your medusas to off-set the +1 Pen result from Open Topped vehicles.

Make sure you put hull heavy flamers on your attacking Chimeras for dealing with Hoard lists. If you plan on keeping a unit back for home objective defensive, I would make it a Plasma unit (if your static you can now Rapid Fire) and leave on the hull heavy bolter to give you some additional firepower. Take that last 5pts to get a pair of bolters for two Plasma gun vet squad Sergeants. The bolter really does a nice job matching up with the Plasma if your not moving for Rapid fire rules.

If you do not care about the Enclosed Crew compartment, get a Officer of the Fleet advisor to slow down foes who use Reserves. Spend 6pts on 3 more Bolters (for a total of 5) and do something like get a heavy stubber on a chimera... I would almost suggest the defensive one, but you can fire defensive weapons when you move, and the HS is a defensive weapon.

6th Ed is rumored to be coming out at the end of this year. They are keeping the game mostly the same but there will be changes in the order of the phases (like you will have to assault before you shoot is a nasty one) as well as things like Feel no Pain will have 3 tiers, and you need the opposite tier of a ability to ignore it or offset it.

Again, it is all rumor now, but it has been reported that all codexs since the Nid dex was made with 6th Ed in mind. Anyway, take it with a grain of salt...

BlkTom: thanks for the great feedback!

I was going to use to Vox to give disembarked veterans orders. Then running 3 of my veteran squads in the Vendettas so if need be i can hop into different chimeras if one gets blown up and at the very least have a vehicle to screen when going up the field. I had the CCS with the Medi pack for rapid fire Plasma guns incase i get a 1 but i can drop the Vox so the squad would have 3 Plasma guns do you think that would work?

CCS, 4 Plasma Gun, Krak Grenades, Chimera, 165

Veteran Squad, 3 Plasma Guns, Chimera 170

OR
Veteran Squad 3 Flamers Demolition Doctrines, Chimera 170
(Same points and i would put this squad in a Vendeta for a good anti horde and vehicle threat?!)

Veteran Squad, 3 Melta Guns, Chimera 155

I was thinking about changing one of the Plasma gunner squads to a flamer squad with the Demoltion Doctrine to make them a decent anti horde and anti mech threat. Again this is something i am thinking about and have no clue how it would actualy do so your C&C are greatly appriciated!! Also for 6th would Guardsman Marbo be good? a sniper pistol and you deploy 1 inch away from an enemy unit. Just thinking out loud

I have no problem with the medusa, but wouldn't take 3 of them. I would maybe find 20 points to take one manticore.

Drop krak grenades on the CCS. Possibly drop one vet squad for a similarly armed second CCS.

the only issue i see with a Manticore is what happens when you weapon destroy it? is it one rocket or the entire thing?

With the 3 Hyrdas i would take a Chimera out so i would only have 2 Empty ones but this way i have a way of either taking out Skimmers and Ork Nob Bikers with 12 Autocannon shots all TL. What do you think? Does anyone think i should switch out one Plasma gun squad for a anti horde squad w/ melta bombs & democharge?

Interesting... I never thought of putting a second CCS in my armies. That's 4 orders per turn.. I've found that orders can really make a big differance. First rank, second rank helped my guard almost kill Mephiston (or whatever it is) in one barrage.

Any C&C are greatly appriciated!
