I've used it on mechrite red and blood red but it didn't seem to work very well. Are there any reds that it worked particularly well with?

Go to a hobby store/shop such as Hobbycraft in the UK and but some non-GW paint. It's vastly cheaper and you can afford to experiment more. Acrylic paint is acrylic paint is acrylic paint...

In order to shade, a wash needs to be noticeably darker than the underlying paint. I think Baal Red would be better suited to shading and reddening oranges and yellows than shading most of the reds that GW offers. You might have more success mixing it with darker washes to warm them up, relying on the darker wash to do the actual shading.

In my limited experience with gw red wash it appears to be better used as a glaze -a thin coat to tint underlying paint- rather than a wash to shade other reds.
You could use red gore as a base, mix bleached bone or elf flesh to highlight, and possibly shade with red wash for a less intense red with a cool tone.

If you are looking to shade a red (ala GW wash style) go w/ Sepia/devlan mud/or Badab Black.
Like the others said... I use the red as a tint for lighter colors. In the example below I've used it over a khaki base to define my Tyranids joints and soft tissues. It can also be used to glaze layers of red back together as they typically get desaturated adding white/yellow to highlight.

Try washing red with green or blue. I wash my Tyranids Thraka Green and it works really well.

I forgot to mention that this is for my red tau. Looking for some way to bring depth to the blood red.
