So I'm going to be picking up a box of Lizardmen Saurus to use in my DnD campaign but I've always wanted to start playing WHFB.
A while ago I picked up a boxed set that had Orcs & Goblins vs The Empire and played a few games with those units so I have a very slight understanding of the game unless the rules changed drastically since then.
So if I end up playing WHFB I'll be playing Lizardmen and I was wondering why type of army they play as and what tactics should I anticipate using, and what should I arm the Saurus with?

Lizardmen are a jack of all trades list. They have great magic, some of the best infantry in the game (sauri and skinks) and some monstrous support (stegadon, salamanders, carnosaurs).
I play against lizardmen about twice a mount, and have for years, and I have to say they are one tough army. Heard alot of negative things though to the players of lizzies.

I tend to agree here. I think this simply stems from the versatility of the army and that they are effective. Well, that and the power of the casters and magic being a bit overpowered in many peoples eyes in 8th edition. But I think they are a great army choice and one which is tempting me as I help one of my sons paint a few up.
As for arming the saurus, if you are thinking ahead in terms of WHFB then a horde of spear saurus can really hurt, and the HW/shield option is the more defensive option with the parry save it gives.

Thanks for the tips, I was wondering is there a "smaller" scale version of WHFB you can play? More akin to the Kill Teams mission in 40k?
If you didn't know it's just a 200 point games and each unit acts as a single model so no squads.
I know there's Mordhien (sp?) but I'm hoping to be able to learn the basics without having to spend a couple hundred bucks to get a decent sized army built.

There was an old PDF document for WHFB called Warbands that was basically for 250-500pt games. It had a bunch of extra rules similar to Kill Teams like no 2+ armor saves, and no 4+ ward saves, and characters can't cost more than "x" points. (I think it was like 75... I know it was too little to take a Scar Veteran). But you might want to see if you can find that anywhere. We did a little Warbands campaign about a year ago at my FLGS and it was pretty fun. I think it was written for 6th Edition though so it doesn't work quite as well anymore.

I think I remember seeing Warbands before, quick question for anyone
Which edition was the Empire vs Orcs starter?
What is Storm of Magic? Is that just an expansion like Apoc?

Empire vs Orcs was 6th edition. Current version is 8th edition, it came out last summer.
Storm of Magic is a magic expansion that came out this summer. I don't have the book, so someone else will have to fill in the details.

Not got SoM either but the general idea of it was upping the power of magic, and getting more people to buy the bigger monsters as any army could take them. Also flicking through the book it looked like you could daemons and VC as allies...
It's not needed to play WHFB though.
Current rule book you should be able to find cheapish on ebay, even if its just the cut down version from IoB and google is your friend for finding warbands. Though I think you could come up with something similar to balance low point games well based around the army composition rules and some house rules on items easily enough.

I have a copy of warbands if you would like me to PM it to you later (its a PDF copy btw), got it from the GW site a while back. Im at work at the moment, so no go yet.
There was also skirmish, which was pretty much the same but without the experience/campaign option (i think).
Unfortunatley, neither are really supported/ viable these days, but you can always give it a go.
