I want to make my tau look more unique like how the space wolves strive to make a name for themselves.

Does anyone have any ideas on how i can make my tau have different characteristic emblems and such? More specifically for my crisis suits.

Hi,
You can add some weathering.
As an example, take a look here : http://advancedtautactica.com/viewtopic.php?f=22&t=10515&st=0&sk=t&sd=a&sid=7e3c5cd0a8efa6d9c48ee13059c8a2c0&start=20

I've seen some people model in Samurai equipment and back banners.

Back banners would be a way to have something custom on each Crisis Suit, stay with the 'anime' aspect of the Tau (vs the modern military aspect of the Tau) in some respects.

Outside of that check here for Crisis Suit Helmet, Weapon, and general suit variants:

I custom pose every model (including my fire warriors and kroot), custom made flying stands, also having a paint job that stands out...

It all depends on how much effort you are willing to put into it, from posing your XV to look like it's flying or shooting, to remolding the fire warrior shoulder pad symbol to the caste emblem, to remolding kroot arms and legs from GS to look like they are flinging through trees or bounding into battle, to rebuilding your standard XV88 into a XV88-2 so the railguns are arm mounted...

The list goes on my friend but simple things like robes and flags is a good touch just to add character but it really does depend on how much work, effort and time your willing to put into each model, believe me, people notice the effort and how much you put in...

Hope this helps

I think mild weathering looks really good on Tau. However, you might want to leave them a little uniform - after all they are all about uniformity and the greater good, don't really stress individuality. But in the end you've got to do what makes you happy - fluff be damned!

Gathering the Informations.

Weathering, things like dustcapes over their armor, grenades and weapon straps, etc go a long way to make things look more unique.

While the Tau aren't very good about individuality, they are however nothing if not practical. A Fire Warrior might forgo looking like the rest of his team in order to have his weapons easier to operate or to provide himself with a bit of an easier way to keep his armor and weapons functional.

Paint them in EXTREEMLY garish colors and model your crisis suits as robotic lions. If you face a Titan form them together into the ultimate and undefeatable crisis suit; Voltron: Defender of the Universe.

Use Star Wars Gunships and ATT tanks (Revell, same scale) for Devilfish and Hammerhead.
Use FW Crisis Suits.
