Subject: [MECHWARRIOR] Mecha models?
|
 |
Lieutenant Colonel

I want to paint some MECHA (from the FASA Mechwarrior universe). I have done quite a bit of research and Ral Patha seems popular but I am after a slightly larger scale (1/72 or better) 15mm or 1/100 is the absolute smallest i am willing to buy.
The problem is that Mecha Model production seems very fragmented due to the different rights and licences (Macross, Robotech, Battletech). I really like the following models and would like to collect a few of each and do some nice Urban or Digital Camo schemes.
Loki
Thor
Thanatos
Daishai
Uriel/ Uziel
It's all a bit difficult to find a way through, anyone have any advice?

Collecting Forge World 30k????? If you prefix any Thread Subject line on 30k or Pre-heresy or Horus Heresy with [30K] we can convince LEGO and the Admin team to create a 30K mini board if we can show there is enough interest! |

You can get all of them except the Thanatos from the MechWarrior: Age of Destruction collectible line. The only one that would be hard to get would be the Daishi. Just Ebay them.

You should be aware that Mechwarrior minis are of an aproximate scale known variously as 1:144, N or 10mm.
However they'll probably be to your liking as they're considerably larger than BT in general however as this pic shows
In the middle is one of the Largest BT figs. Flanked by one of the smallest MW figs and one of the larger MW figs.
As for where to find MW minis, Check these sites also for those minis.
Troll and Toad
Miniatures Market
Strike Zone
Sometimes it's less expensive, but as with ebay check the shipping costs.
In larger scales, there are a couple of "museum scale" mechs available from ironwind metals, though I don't believe any of them are the one's on your list. http://ironwindmetals.com/store/index.php?cPath=16_44_199 Museum scale is aprox 12mm, but not consistent across the range, which is visualy looks about 25% bigger compared to 10mm MW figs.
Going up from there you're pretty much limited to Macross/Dougram model kits and toys. These are going to be limited to the "unseen" deisgns from early classic battletech that were "borrowed" by FASA. None of which, unfortunately are the mechs on your list. Most of the kits are of the F14 inspired land-air-mechs, but there are some other classic designs you will recognize from battletech.
Do a search at hobbylink Japan to find a whole range of kits from 1/144 to 1/48. NOte that the scales are not going to match exactly with how big they would have been in battletech. http://www.hlj.com/scripts/hljlist?Word=macross&Dae=All&Series=All&Dis=2
Ebay is your friend for these kits also, but as may of them are discontinued it can get pricey.
Search about for various toys. The mechs you know as Archer, Longbow, Warhammer and Rifleman have been released in the past in both 3 and 7 inch (scales well with 28mm) versions (among others) under different names, most recently by playmates at the end of the EXO Squad line.
Lastly, email Ravenstar studios and ask nicely. They do limited, unadvertised releases of battletech mechs other than the Macross designs in big 1/60 scale that go for about 75 bucks each and scale well with 28mm!
Happy Hunting!

Wow cheers.. I am now fascinated by this and also Star Wars stuff. The Wizards of Coast figures whilst nice, are prepainted and worst of all are random bloody boxed sets! How are you to collect an Army!
I would love to see Star Wars in a Flames of War style, with Tanks, Troops, Vehicles, Robot's, transports and Spacecraft. Imagine whole Companies of Imperial Stormtroopers, AT-ST's and Hover Bikes and Rebel Commando's with support weapons.

Only one note about the above picture:
The Plastech Atlas (middle 'Mech) is not even CLOSE to being the largest Battletech sculpt these day. Many have become excessively large for (in theory) about 1:285 to 1:300 scale.

Isn't it one of the few 100 ton Mechs, though?

Go to the same sites I mentioned for MW figs. They also sell individual SW figs, many figs are quite inexpensive. Automatically Appended Next Post: Mattlov wrote:Only one note about the above picture:

Good point. There's been alot of scale creep in some of the Battletech models. Still, none of them really approach the size of the heavy mechs in the MW clix range.

Yeah, but due to some sculpting weirdness and some poor quality control, there are 40 ton 'Mechs that are as big as the Plastech Fatlas.

The Ravenstar 'Mechs were sized to be size compatible with the discontinued FASA licensed 1/60the scale Armorcast 'Mechs: Atlas, Mad Cat, Vulture, Armored Flatbed Truck and Clan Elemental.
Archived website here: http://www.timdp.members.sonic.net/battletech/
The Clan Elemental is still available through Iron Wind Metals.

The clan elemental is still avaialble, but IIRC, it's more 25mm scale and looks a bit runty next to current 28-32mm figs. Still it's worth fudging scale a bit when playing Battletech.

The newer 28mm scale Armorcast Elemental is 50mm tall and towers over 28mm scale Marines. See the Elemental - Space Marine comparison photo below.

The original FASA Elemental was indeed 25mm scale, which was why we did a new 28mm scale sculpt to go with the big 28mm scale Mechs.

The Mechwarrior models are cheap right now, you can even get some tanks, troops and flying vehicles at good prices.
