Hi,

Im new to the forum, so excuse if this is in the wrong place. Im an ish seasoned gamer. I play Grey Knights, Space Wolves and that, now im going for a more...Vanilla taste, nomnomnom

I have always loved the Ultramarines fluff, the books, the models, everything, only thing that has stopped me is the incessant bombardment of pish and tish saying you cant play fluffy and win.

This must be wrong.

I dont need an army to win competetivley, i play in a relatively small group, 5-6, and i can table any of them in about 4 turns whether i play GK or SW. So im not worried about being them, were not even that hot on winning, and i have two other armies for that.

What i want is few unit ideas, more especially HQ units that are fluffy, and how you can use them without being smashed into the ground. As i say, im a fluffy played, but i know that i may look at Marneus Calgar with 3 Squads of buffed Hnour Guard with more pride than i would if i looked at Hayley Williams the morning after

So any ideas would be most appreciated. And general theme for the army, or specific tactics for them. I play marines enough to know that Gk, SW and UM will and do all play differently, i just dont know how to play them yet.

So yeah, any help, But keep it fluffy

Thanks in Advance

40k general would be a better place for this.

If you don't care about being competitive, and just want to build a fluffy force, the Space Marine codex can make just about anything and still not have a super weak army.

There's units to avoid for sure - Vanguard Veterans are very expensive for what they do, especially when given upgrades (5 man unit with thunder hammers racking up about 250 points is absurd), Honour Guard are overpriced for what they are, Whirlwinds are pretty terrible.

But still, including one of those units in a non-competitive army in a non-competitive environment isn't going to cripple an army. Codex Space Marines is lucky in that it is hard to build an outright terrible army.
