Do Monstorous creatures such as Hive Tyrants get a cover save if normal size models like Termagaunts are intervining between the MC and the unit shooting at it?

simple answer: no

Long answer: 50% of the MC must be hidden to gain a cover save (same as a vehicle)

Know thy self. Everything follows this.

Yup, thats why i`ve got no mc`s in my nids no more.

Not that i would have tried to get a save from a gaunt but a nid warrior surely something eh?

Well no as it turns out, the 50% rule takes precedence.

Remember its only models that block LOS not units, remember that INAT.

You can block LOS with Warriors if you get enough of them. You can block LOS with Gargoyles also - enough to get 50% anyway. So yes, it's possible - but as with all TLOS questions, it varies depending on the board.

That or add in tyrant guard, now it's a mix of MC/non-MC cover saves from intervening units and area terrain hooray

I was thinking of using Gargoyles to shield a winged HT is why I asked. The wife and I are both just learning and I couldn't find a specific ruling on that so thanks everyone. I guess we will treat it as a no.

Treat it as a yes if:
The models do actually cover 50% of the MC then he has a 4+ cover save.

This depends on the actual position of said models, and the position of the firing model.

Treat it as a no if: The models do not actually cover 50% of the MC

No, they dont get cover.
but as someone already said if you join the MC with other modles using IC rules they get cover that way

examples, Hive guard with a Hive tyrant/swarmlord
Warrior Prime with Carnefex

False. MCs get cover like vehicles do - block 50% or more, and they have cover.

And your example is wrong - it's Tyrant Guard you're thinking of, not Hive Guard. If you're going to provide examples, they should be correct.

MC cant get the cover save for being behind enemy troops, seeing as they're so large. It's a 50% deal just like vehicles.

...unless those troops obscure 50% of the MC from view.

There is nothign special about what can convey cover to the MC, just how much of the MC needs to be obscured in order to be considered in cover.

Also note that you do not count wings for determining what part of a model is in cover or not. If the Hive Tyrant you plan on making has 50% of his body obscured, while all of his wings are visible (so, let's say 65-70% of the actual model is visible), then he would still get a cover save.

Absolutely. Gargoyles have a surprisingly large silhouette. Even the gigantic Forgeworld winged tyrant can get a cover save from Gargoyles.

Ok so 50% it is and we were wondering if the HT wings counted against him or not so thank you for clarifying that.. The Gargoyles screen him very well. One last question. Can a HT with wings still join a unit of Tyrant guard and just have to slow it's movement to 6"like the TG?

He can do that if he wants, but he's wasting a 60 point upgrade.
