Any EVE players here? With it's stupidly high learning curve...
Although there are more tutorials now which makes everything better.
I am an industrialist in roughly Amarr region of space, if any of you know Raiden, I am right next to where they are killing everything, as I sit in the sidelines hoping they don't find my starbase.
Oh I forgot, my name in it is Uhtredskaer Lothbrokson.

I've been wanting to try this game out for a while. Got some questions:
How is the combat?
SHould I get the STEAM version or the non steam version?
Is it really worth 14 bucks a month?
Can you describe an "average gaming session?" Really got no clue about the game, except that it looks cooler than WOW and you control a space ship
How much grinding is involved?

I don't know how bad it is now, but when Eve first came out it was considered very hardcore amongst the MMO crowd.
I remember two of my friends quitting WoW after TBC came out in order to focus on Eve. They felt that WoW had been dumbed down. This was back when it took well over 100 hours to hit level max levels for most people and probably an additional 50-100 hours just to get geared enough to raid. Maxing out your PvP rank required something like 14 hours a day of playing. And the two who quit were in the only guild on our server to clear all the raids available at the time. Which is something that I believe less than 0.1% of the population achieved. Might be less than that.
So unless Eve has been dumbed down a lot, I would invest a lot of time researching it before jumping in and realizing that it takes too much of a time investment to be worthwhile.

I played it for about 6 months, and I absolutely loved it. Like, im a bit of a space nerd, but the player driven economy and constantly raging faction wars really hooked me.
The only downside to this game is that you need to invest a LOT of time into it, just be on par with most other players. So if you dont have the time to play the game, I wouldn't bother. Unfortunately Its not really a pick up and play kinda game :(

I played Eve for quite a few years and quit when I had a character with 50+ mil SP only to come back a year later and start a new character who now has around 20 mil or so SP.
It is really a great game in a lot of ways. The player driven economy is very interesting and if you wanted to you could just play the market and it would be a full game in itself. I was more of a PvP player and that is definitely fun as well. The game is very unforgiving in pvp; however, as if you lose the fight, you lose your ship and everything that was on it, which can be offputting for some. I preferred it that way as it really makes you think about when to fight and when to cut and run. Also it really gets the adrenaline going. The community is also very good as pretty much any momo in the game is killed until they quit or just cannot handle the high learning curve.
Now on to the bad / potential downsides. In Eve your character learns at a set pace based off of skills, so the older players are more powerful period. There are ways to catch up quickly by focusing on specific ships, but if you try to fly everything you will never been competitive in the world of pvp. Money is the XP of eve as you can earn it by working hard and with it you can buy many advantages such as better ships and weapons. Also they implemented the noble store or whatever where you can pay real money for clothes and this particular feature ticked me off, but you can of course just not buy clothes as they offer no stat bonuses. Your character itself can also be killed if your pod is destroyed in pvp or ganking and you will lose very expensive brain implants, so that is also something to be aware of. Finally you have to read up on baiting and how the pirates of Eve act so that you can avoid getting destroyed while in high security space minding your own business. Getting ganked for not knowing all of the mechanics is perfectly normal and acceptable behavior in Eve. The devs will not help you for getting blown up if is was anything other than some issue where the game froze up some how. Anything else is your problem as it is a bit of a free for all in that way.
Hope that answered some of your questions. You can play the game casually if you are a mission runner and keep training your character, but if you want to do 0.0 and heavy pvp it is a significant time investment as those particular powerful corporations require participation.
My last bit of advice is unless you plan on being a heavy mission runner, take your time getting up to a battleship and stick with cruiser hulls. A battleship requires about a half year of specific training or more to be truely powerful and you will likely just end up getting owned. Bigger is definitely not always better in Eve and even after 50 mil SP I flew mostly Heavy assault cruisers and command ships.
If you have any other questions feel free to hit me up.

only 100 hours to max your level? I'm at 120 or so in Skyrim and not even close to maxing everything
I tried EVE but it was a little complex and kinda dull to me, but it's probably more fun if you play it with friends.

It's true, EVE is a lot better when you have friends playing. All of mine fell off the wagon and we weren't really very far into anything so there is little draw for me to go back.

One thing I love about EVE is the constant player faction wars, look at this map of null-sec for example.

I am in a corp that is really trying to step up it's game at the moment in Amarr space. Reminds me of this graph I saw recently about EvE
One thing that I think is funny about EvE, is that on WoW after about 3 months you aren't a noob anymore and you know pretty much everything about the whole game, on EvE it's just so big and constantly updated (I mean a pretty big, and free, expansion every few months) that even after about 6 months, you are still considered a newbie by most of the player population.
