I'm pretty much looking for an army that won't get shot to hell before I get to move it places. Any suggestions?

Well......
A Tallyman Nurgle Daemon list could work (Special Herald and all nurgle all the time)
All Wracks Dark Eldar (with Haemocs and Talos)
Blood Angels (Jumppacks and apothecaries. Add Dante and sang Guard with Apoths to get Scoring 2+ jumppacks with FNP.)
White Scars (biker marines)
Draigowing (Draigo and Pallies)
Deathwing/Ravenwing/Dualwing (Termies/Bikes/Termies AND bikes)
To be fair, I just kinda named armies with either FNP, T5, or a 2+ save.

Death-Dealing Devastator
Wherever the Emperor commands.

in short.... Imperial Guard
LR battle cannon has a 72' range s8 ap3 ordinance 1 (I think)
Not to mention the shear table domination they get with all of their big artillery.
the poll asked for a good defensive army... and i think thats what guard is best at...
they have the ability to rain large blast templates over a table with out moving (as long as you include a lot of big ordnance( which they have A LOT of))
how ever... your question implies that you want an offensive tough army in which case gray knights are good at not dieing
don't know how tough the new necrons will be
hope i helped

You know, I wasn't actually thinking about speed, like Bikers and Jump Infantry have. Good call. But, I don't know so much about the DE. Can't their vehicles get taken down by bolter fire?

Your opening post doesn't really explain what you desire IMHO; defensive is very subjective and can be interpreted in a multitude of ways, whilst you don't really explain any other preferences, such as painting etc.
Nonetheless, guns should/would equal 'defense' as you don't need to go to your enemy; you can sit on the defence and blast away at your enemies, whereas with CC you have to go to the enemy and play aggressively, rather than defensively. Usually.
Then again, you may want both guns and close combat ability.
Imperial Guard are arguably the shootiest army in the game, thereby suiting defence, whilst they also remain relatively stationary and have some very tough, large and shooty vehicles. Mechanised gunline is very potent.
This though, is only the stereotypical guard army, like most it can vary hugely with different variants, but they are what springs to my mind when you say defensive.
Space Marines (Codex) can also fit the bill, being predominantly shooty and tough also. I feel they are also best played defensively, rather than aggressively, usually.
Necrons are currently more suited to defense/ranged attacks and this will probably remain the same with their upcoming Codex (probably Nov.).
Grey Knights are also a predominantly shooty army, but they can also perform VERY well in close combat, thereby they can shoot then finish off the enemy in close combat.
Blood Angels have the mobility and toughness to work defensively, but they are also typically close combat orientated.

"As I recall, your face was tortured. Imagine that - the Master of the Wolves, his ferocity twisted into grief. And yet you still carried out your duty. You always did what was asked of you. So loyal. So tenacious. Truly you were the attack dog of the Emperor. You took no pleasure in what you did. I knew that then, and I know it now. But all things change, my brother. I'm not the same as I was, and you're... well, let us not mention where you are now."

I'd like to add a Death Guard army to the list. They are hard as hell to kill ( FNP with 5T) and when used in large numbers and combined with some heavier hitters Death guard can be hard as hell to kill.

The Raiders can be shot down, but can move like it's no ones business.

Gotta agree with Zombie Cat. The best defence is a good offence. While Guard are deliciously squishy their tanks aren't.
2 squads of 2 or 3 Leman Russ tanks supported by 2 techpriests with servitors. Ccs with sniper rifles and MoO and 2 or 3 squads of guardsmen for close in fire support and that should about do it. That should be about able to cut down anything before it reachs your lines.

I voted Grey Knights since they can take 3+/5++ troops choices. If your only real problem is getting shot before you get to do anything, then go with a drop pod list. You'll always get to get at least one round of shooting before you get eliminated!

I play mechdar (well mostly, I like sprinkling spiders and jetbikes in). And I can firmly attest that the best defensive army is... Imperial Guard. My friend plays them and he can put a scary amount of both defense and offense on the table. Look at it this way, a mechanized IG army, with a wall of av12 chimera backed up by heavier tanks such as Hydras, Manticores and Leman Russes will outshoot every army in the game. When it comes to winning a brutal war of attrition and long ranged combat there is no equal to the Imperial Guard... Sheer numbers.

So you think that engaging the enemy with powerful weapon at long range is a bad way to defend a position? I suppose, you could leave a token force behind and go running around attacking things. But that's called something else... offense?

"I went into a hobby-shop to play m'self a game,
The 'ouse Guru 'e up an' sez "The Guard is weak and lame!"

Oh it's "Angels this" an' "Space-wolves that", and "Guardsmen, go away!";
But it's "Thank you for the ordnance" when the Guard begins to play,
O it's "LOOK AT ALL THE ORDNANCE!" when the Guard begins to play.."

Ig without a doubt is good defense. If you are looking for a dedicated attrition army go through forgeworld and make a death corp of kreig using the imperial armour.

Imperial Guard definitely. Dark Eldar and Eldar could be, however they are more defensive through mobility than durability.
