What developer in your opinion has proven again and again that they know how to change an aging franchise for the better?
I believe the small Austin,Tx company: Retro Studios has done an amazing job in helping Nintendo keeping their old franchises new and exciting.
Metroid Prime was amazing, and it was no easy task for Retro to make. Dozens of workers were laid off over the long years this game was in development. Bringing Metroid's massive environments and hidden secrets would have been a difficult task for anyone, but Retro Studios blew Metroid fans away when Samus made the leap from 2d adventure into First Person- adventure. The environments were large and stunning. The music was amazing, and the story line was very engaging. There was a lot of mystery as to what the Space Pirates were doing on Tallon IV (a once Chozo planet) or even what happened to the Chozo themselves. Through exploration and investigation with the new scan feature you were able to piece together the events that took place on the planet.
Retro Studios also went on to create Donkey Kong Country Returns and again amazed people with their talents.
Rumor has it that they may also be working on a new Star Fox game. If that's true, there's no doubt it will live up to fans' expectations.

Well, for the past 10 years Bungie has been doing a pretty bang up job. I also have to give credit to the Total War guys, they come out with some sweet ass games.

I definitely agree on Retro Studios (Metroid Prime)
Nintendo must be the master. Not only do they keep their games fresh, they keep selling the same games to the same people every couple of years! They do it with hand helds too!

Insomniac; Resistance, Ratchet and Clank are pretty fun each time they make one.
Neversoft have always produced pretty neat Mortal Kombat games.
Westwood and Pandemic were also pretty good until they were eventually shut down.

I think Bethesda does an amazing job at this. Its almost like an entirely new series every game.

Bethesda does a decent job. Bioware does an excellent job. Sadly, I'd say Blizzard does, but they really have a lot to do to improve WoW. Still they dominated RTSs in the 90s, Diablo and its sequel were two of the top action RPGs of the 90s if not of all time, and to put it simply WoW revolutionized MMORPGs. I'd go as far as to say that they changed a single genre more so than any other developer in 20 years.

I didn't really like the warcraft RPGS, never played diablo. but WoW got boring after I did the same quest for the 7th time at level 10.

Don't you know Valve only make things in 2's Left 4 Dead 2, Portal, Half-Life 2, DotA 2, Half-life 2: Episode 2 and Team Fortress 2. There's never going to an episode 3 MUHAHAHA!
