Hello Dakka. I have recently been pulled in by the Primarch Alpharius, and have decided to start the Alpha Legion! So, does anybody have any painting, and modeling tips on the Alpha legion? Conversions too, I love to convert.

I've always wanted to do a conversion for an Alpha Legion DP. I mean, in my mind, we'd be looking at a Hydra/Dragon-like thing. Basically, King Ghidorah in Green and Blue. One of the Dark Elf Hydra models was what I was thinking about specifically. Here:

It all depends on 'when' you're setting your army.

Pre-Heresy?

"Current" timeline?

And what do you think the Legion is all about now?

Opinions vary, rather widely, but one thing is for sure...

...you picked the best Legion out there!

Thank you, Alpharius! Actually, yes, I was thinking Pre-Heresy.

I've just started putting up my own heresy era Alpha Legion blog:

Personally I'm not a huge fan of the scales & hydra imagery used by chaos 40k Alpha Legion, nor any of the many variations on he colour scheme (which has changed with ever Chaos codex). If you're going heresy era you're gonna run into the blue/purple/indigo armour question. I have my method that works for me, if you sniff around you'll find plenty of other ideas and colour recipes.

Also with regards to armour marks, my own opinion is that being the last Legion founded, right near the end of the Great Crusade, that MKII armour wouldn't be used and MKIII would be uncommon, so the majority would be MKIV and MKV. Also given their sneaky nature and ambiguous loyalties I'd go so far as to say MKVI wouldn't be all that rare (MKVII, available to some Legions during the Siege of Terra is also a super-rare possibility).

You can make MKV 'Heresy' armour from the plaics if you can find a method of adding studs that won't drive you mad, and as for MKIV 'Maximus' armour, you'll get a force together a lot quicker and cheaper if you go for the Red Scorpions set rather than the pure MKIV 5-man set.

Another gentlemen's work to peruse is migsula. Have a little search through his gallery page here on dakka and you'll definitely get some inspiration.

If you're considering which rule sets to best represent them (a la legion, use of human agents etc) then GK is an option. Henchmen units, coteaz etc gives you lots of options for putting marines and humans in the same team.

Thanks for all of your help. Instead of playing Alpha Legion, I am going to make a strikeforce to add to my Chaos Legion.
